James Gunn Is Writing (And Maybe Directing) Suicide Squad 2

Earlier this year, Disney fired James Gunn as writer-director of Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 after some alt-right dillhole unearthed some offensive tweets that Gunn made a decade ago and had already apologized for -- a move that totally isn't backfiring on Disney, no sirree. In spite of this (or perhaps because of it), Gunn just got himself a new gig: writer and possibly director of Suicide Squad 2.

It might sound like an odd career trajectory, but it makes total sense when you think about it. Both series center around teams of misfits forced into working together to save the day. Both turned out to be box office successes despite being based on relatively unknown comic book properties. And both love themselves some music, although in the case of Suicide Squad, this love manifested itself as pop songs playing every 0.2 seconds.

While we're not entirely sure what Gunn is going to do with the movie (this news was only announced yesterday, after all), it's fair to say that he'll probably take SS2 in a radically different direction from the first, in that it might wind up having a coherent plot. There's also been speculation that he's going to toss out the original lineup -- or at least, everyone barring Margot Robbie, who's also appearing as Harley Quinn in 2020's Birds Of Prey -- which if true is great news for Dave Bautista, who clamored to jump aboard as soon as the news was announced.

There's also a lot of hype over Gunn bringing his trademark sense of humor with him, but be careful what you wish for, guys. It's all fun and games now, but we're not sure even the Joker could survive the internet outrage machine.
