@ Maximose - I'm pretty sure this is a pisstake of the sims. The loading screen says 'refreshing splines' which was also on the sims loading screen, and I guess Cody is trying to make a satire of the ridiculous and generally pointless micromanagement aspect of the game. I never really got the sims, it was so addictive but it pretty much emulated everything I play games to avoid. Strange.
reticulating splines, sweetie...and yes, it's been used in The Sims loading screen for as long as I can remember... The Sims was made for control freaks like me, though I play less and less as time goes on.
I think the reason most people don't get these things is because you have to understand games to see the humor, i.e. if you think WOW is a good game, that HALO was the best FPS of its time, or buy Madden every year, you won't figure it out.
Not to say you'll find it funny even if you do understand it, but I think it's pretty clever.
you really need to stop using this format
it stopped resembling something funny after the first one
i like some of your stuff now that i have gotten used to it, but this seriously consisted of about 3 and a half jokes, 2 and a half of those repeated at least once
please stick to your "tales to tell around midnight" posts and the like
if you develop those just a little bit more, they could be comedic gold
I'm a huge fan of Game Helping Squads. Please do more, more often!
Cody... confuses me, I have to say. I've observed the love/hate war in the comments section (which seems typical for every writer at Cracked), and usually I don't think he's that bad, or that good - although for the written articles, I'll admit I don't always get the humor. In fact, I rarely get the humor. But it never really seems "awful".
But Game Helping Squad always gets a chuckle, and I enjoy them immensely. Really, and no offence to Cody, but that's all he really should do. Because they're awesome.
All of his game videos usually play off of the complexity of similar games. This one in particular is a parody of the Sims franchise, where you control a family, a farm, a city or whatever depending on the game. For example in the old Sim City games you controlled everything: Taxes, road buildings, you built everything. This parody takes it as a joke as actually playing God and doing well, everything in the Universe. Some of his other stuff pokes fun at RTS games like Age of Empires and goes into the complexity of things such as selecting people and making commands for them. Of course, it's all blown out of proportion, and some of the games he does don't reference anything. They're all known for their ridiculous level of complexity and seeming un-funess however. Check out more of them and you might gain a better understanding.

Hellooo, I didn't really like blogs but your blog was one of the reasons I set up my own one, too. Nice articles keep up the good work. :)
ReplyWow. I hate Cody with a passion, but this was actually pretty decent.
ReplyGreat post! Thanks for all the good info you have posted here. I have enjoyed my stay.
ReplyOf all the Cody entries the game helpin' squad ones are definitely the best. World Quester II was brilliant.

It seems to me like it's making fun of Facebook and its millions of stupid clone games... that's what I got from it anyway. xP
ReplyOk all flaming aside. I really am curious what this is making fun of. I am dead serious i dont get it. Someone explain please.
