Here Are All the Comedy Pilots Being Developed for Next Season
Fall used to be a bonanza for comedy fans, with old favorite sitcoms returning and a slew of new comic treasures to sift through. These days, there are a lot fewer comedies to choose from, but according to Deadline, the four broadcast networks still have ten new joke-fests they’re considering for next year’s schedule. Here’s a preview of what might be coming our way.
Poppa’s House
CBS already has a page on its site for Poppa’s House, so odds for a pick-up look good. Here’s the official description: “Legendary talk radio host and happily divorced “Poppa” (Damon Wayans) has his point of view challenged at work when a new female co-host is hired, and at home where he finds himself still parenting his adult son (Damon Wayans Jr.), a brilliant dreamer who is trying to pursue his passion while being a responsible father and husband.”
Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage
The name for the Young Sheldon spin-off just dropped, and it’s a doozy. We know from the Big Bang Theory finale that Nobel Prize winner Sheldon gets congratulatory texts from both Georgie’s ex-wife and Georgie’s other ex-wife. Which one is Mandy? “I’m hoping that I’m the ex-wife and the new wife,” Emily Osment told TVLine. “People get divorced and remarried. Why can’t she be both?”
Going Dutch
Denis Leary is behind a show that Deadline describes like this: “A decorated, hard-ass colonel is tasked with running the least important U.S. Army base in the world, located in the tulip-hugging, wine-chugging Netherlands.”
10% Happier
Fox loves The Masked Singer’s Ken Jeong, the comic leading this sitcom based on Dan Harris’ popular book and podcast. Jeong plays a family man and mid-level executive who has a panic attack at work. The episode inspires him to change everything about the way he lives to become 10% happier.
Buffalo Tens
Another Period’s Natasha Leggero and Riki Lindhome star as “two brash 40-something matchmakers in Buffalo, NY, (who) are unexpectedly dumped by their husbands. They’re forced to put their ‘tried and true’ dating regimen – The Buffalo Tens Commandments – to the test for themselves. While out in the dating scene for the first time in 20 years, they’ll realize the antiquated methods they’ve recommended to clients won’t actually help at all, and they may have to question everything they know about dating, relationships and love.”
Bedrock
Elizabeth Banks exec produces and leads the voice cast as an adult Pebbles in this Flintstones spinoff. The show takes place as “the Stone Age gives way to a shiny and enlightened new Bronze Age” so get ready for a bunch of metal puns.
St. Denis Medical
From the people who brought you Superstore and American Auto, Wendi McLendon-Covey and David Alan Grier star in a “mockumentary about an underfunded, understaffed Oregon hospital where the dedicated doctors and nurses try their best to treat patients while maintaining their own sanity.”
Happy’s Place
Reba McEntire plays Bobbie, a woman running a local bar. “My dad was the owner, and I’ve been running it for the last ten years, and my dad dies,” she told Entertainment Tonight. “I find out some information at the reading of his will that I’m not too happy with, so…”
Shifting Gears
The one red-state America has been waiting for, with Tim Allen once again starring as a tool guy. Deadline reports that ABC was so eager to get back in the Allen business that it wrote two shows for him to choose from. Allen opted for the one in which he grunts as the “stubborn, widowed owner of a classic car restoration shop.”
Forgive & Forget
Modern Family’s Ty Burrell returns as perennial life of the party Hank. “After an unexpected diagnosis, Hank reconnects with his responsible adult son Ben in hopes of making new memories together.”
