They have gone to battle disguised as men, fooled armies, and even had romantic relationships with pirates. They have been pirates themselves, as well as spies, warriors, and authors. They have been brave, daring, and revolutionary.

This list is a tribute to these remarkable folks and the stories of their courage and resilience... and a couple of men who underwent an elaborate disguise to pull off something incredible. We hope that by sharing these stories, we can inspire others to challenge the status quo and follow in the footsteps of these remarkable individuals (well, aside from piracy and warfare, anyway). So without further ado, here are some incredible tales of historic gender bending.

"Rusty" persevered.

CRACKED was SPORTS Gender- Bending Badasses Rena Rusty Kanokogi was a pioneering judo athlete who was denied a gold medal in 1959 because she was a woman. She had to disguise herself as a man to compete. It took 50 years, but eventually she was awarded the medal she deserved.
