The Best Times Bill Maher’s Guests Put Him in His Place

Right now, smarmy “centrist” comedian Bill Maher is under fire from the entertainment community for his decision to cross the WGA picket line and return to his TV show Real Time. Comics across the internet are now taking turns teeing off on the comedy world’s a-hole uncle, but as good as many of the burns have been, none of them compare to the time Rowdy Roddy Piper put Maher in a metaphorical sleeper hold on his own show.

Maher has been drawing criticism for weeks now as he’s hinted at his disagreements with and defiance of the WGA strike, delivering soundbites on his Club Random podcast such as, “They kind of believe that you’re owed a living as a writer, and you’re not. This is show business.” And his return announcement tweet has been lambasted by many in the entertainment world, with stand-up star Sam Morril quoting Maher, “‘I will honor the spirit of the strike by not doing a monologue, New Rules or desk pieces.’ Bc you can’t. Writers did that stuff. That’s not honoring them. It’s something you are not able to do.”

Throughout Maher’s career as a fence-sitting panel peddler, many comedians, celebrities, rock stars and WWE Hall-of-Famers have called out his asinine antics in some of the most satisfying put-downs in talk show history. Here are a few of our favorites…

Bill Burr Calling BS on Maher’s ‘Political Correctness’ Complaining

There might be no better indictment of the emptiness of the threat that the internet PC Police and Cancel Culture warriors pose to comedy than Burr telling Maher that he “didn’t notice” he was under attack. Burr’s smirk when Maher suggests that “political correctness is killing comedy” speaks louder than whatever tweets from teenagers that Maher compiled to prove his victimhood ever could.

Henry Rollins Disapproved of Maher’s Claims That 12-Year-Old Boys Cannot Be Raped By 35-Year-Old Women

Of all the disgusting and illogical hills to die on, this was one of Maher’s worst — he argued that Mary Kay Letourneau, a teacher famous for molesting her sixth grade student and having two kids from the illegal and unconscionable relationship, was simply a “woman in love” who didn’t conform to America’s idea of a perfect nuclear family. The notoriously irate Rollins didn’t even need to go nuclear to tell Maher how fucked up that is.

Ben Affleck Berates Maher and Sam Harris for Saying That Islamophobia Doesn’t Exist

Quack neuroscientist and racialist Sam Harris is a favorite guest of Maher’s for their shared belief that the religion of Islam is, in itself, one of the largest threats to the Western world, and that what others call “Islamophobia” is just a rational response to the terrorism and extremism practiced by a tiny percentage of the 1 billion Muslims worldwide. My boy’s wicked smaht.

Rowdy Roddy Piper Rips Maher to Shreds for Calling Wrestling A Joke

For someone who is supposedly famous for his quick wit, he sure got his ass (and Piper’s ass) handed to him repeatedly when he inexplicably decided to invite many of the world’s most beloved professional wrestlers onto the show just to mock their profession. Piper’s impassioned monologue followed by a devastating retort hit Maher harder than any steel chair could.
