Bill Maher Defends Football Fans That Booed Taylor Swift

Just because they’re dinner buddies now doesn’t mean that Bill Maher won’t criticize Donald Trump on his show. For example, he recently took the President to task for his “being mean to Taylor Swift” policy.
On this week’s episode of Overtime, the YouTube follow-up to Real Time for viewers who somehow haven’t bludgeoned themselves to the point of losing consciousness, Maher brought up Trump’s recent Truth Social attack on Swift. “Has anyone noticed that, since I said ‘I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT,’ she’s no longer ‘HOT?’” Trump said in a quote that will no doubt be studied by presidential historians for decades.

“All the deals, but he still has time for this. You gotta love him,” Maher told his guests.
While it’s unclear what exactly the Ghosts Can’t Do It star meant, Maher offered his opinion. “I don’t think he means physically hot, I think he means hot in the business,” Maher theorized. Guest Peter Hamby, on the other hand, had assumed that Trump was “criticizing her looks,” which wouldn’t be a huge surprise coming from the guy who has repeatedly “attacked women by demeaning their looks.”
If it was really Taylor Swift’s popularity that Trump was going after, that too makes zero sense. As Maher pointed out, she is out of the limelight right now, but only because she just wrapped up the highest-grossing tour of all-time, which lasted for nearly two years. “She needs time to relax and be with that football player,” Maher said.
Although Maher defended Swift from Trump’s easily debunkable conclusion, he was less generous when it came to the time that Swift was booed at the Super Bowl. “And by the way, when she got booed, they weren’t booing her in general,” Maher argued. “What they were booing was, ‘We don’t like you so much in football. Let us just have football. Let us have one thing without Taylor Swift involved.’”
This seems like a pretty simplistic summation of an event that a lot of people have blamed on misogyny, and which was arguably stoked by Trump's presence.
It remains to be seen whether or not Swifties get mad at Maher for this latest comment, but if so, it wouldn’t be the first time. He previously sparked a backlash amongst fans for joking about how crazy it is that “Taylor Swift has had the same boyfriend for over a year.”
Incidentally, Maher had nothing to say about the fact that Trump also warned Bruce Springsteen to “KEEP HIS MOUTH SHUT” and called him a “dried out ‘prune’ of a rocker.”
That would probably be a better insult if not for the fact that dried fruits are historically terrific musicians.
