Like, you know, screenwriting in general, there’s an art to a perfect movie monologue. Back when a tight 90 minutes was the standard, you couldn’t waste time on a five-minute speech unless it was truly riveting. In the era of afternoon-long blockbusters, it’s even more important to keep the audience engaged, lest you invite angry, hyperglycemic viewers to riot in comment sections across the internet.

With that in mind, redditor BurningAndFrozen recently asked r/movies, “What’s your favorite monologue from a movie?” Their choice was Salieri comparing Mozart’s music to “hearing the voice of God” in Amadeus, which does indeed whip. Others brought up the classic soliloquies we all know and quote as well as some lesser-appreciated ones that will nevertheless be shared all over social media when the actor who delivered them dies.
