Rejoice, proud '80s geeks -- Revenge of the Nerds, the once-beloved 1984 comedy that aged worse than a carton of milk sitting out on a kitchen counter since its premiere day 36 years ago, is getting a much needed do-over, in a new, less, erm, uncomfortable reboot produced by Seth MacFarlane's Fuzzy Door production company.
On Wednesday, Variety reported that the classic film would be returning to the big screen in a new iteration, with Keith and Kenny Lucas of 22 Jump Street both starring in the film, and writing the script alongside Rick and Morty's Alex Ruebens. Take that, Alpha Betas!
Led by the comedic mastermind behind Family Guy, Ted, and of course, the awkward musical number, "We Saw Your Boobs" at the 2013 Oscars, this adaptation will hopefully be less uncomfortable than its source material. "The upcoming version won’t be a remake of the 1984 comedy, which hasn't aged all that well and has been criticized in recent years for depictions of rape," according to the entertainment publication. "Instead, the contemporary reimagining will pontificate about today's nerd culture and what even constitutes a geek in the 21st century. Hopefully this time, that pontification will come sans graphic depictions of sexual assault via Darth Vader mask, a grown woman seemingly attempting to bone a 13-year-old boy, and of course, tasteless ta-ta toe-tappers.
So, for the sake of '80s cinema lovers, proud nerds, and you know, women and young boys that simply exist, let's hope this reboot ages better than its predecessor. If we can have just one nice thing in this, erm, colorful year, let it be this.
