Bill Maher is Secretly Text Buddies With Donald Trump

From dinner companions to digital pen pals

Bill Maher took a lot of heat for his decision to share a friendly dinner at the White House with President Donald Trump earlier this year. Even some Bill Maher superfans, who somehow stuck with the Real Time host for all these years, seemed to be pretty fed-up with Maher after the incident.

And now it seems as though the two are even tighter than we thought.

On the latest episode of Bill Maher’s podcast/cry for help Club Random, the Real Time host hung out with former co-chair of the Republican National Committee and archenemy of music, Lara Trump. While discussing her father-in-law, President Trump, Lara Trump praised Maher for telling the world that “he’s not a total lunatic like everybody wants to report,” adding, “I think it’s great, I’m so happy you did that.”

Maher then revealed that he’s been privately texting with Trump, specifically because the president took issue with a recent segment on Real Time. “It’s so funny,” Maher said, “he texted a couple – I don’t think I’m telling tales out of school. I would not betray any private confidence I’ve had with him, but I don’t think this is very personal, but he texted me a few weeks ago, yelling at me.”

“I say to my critics on the left, ‘Couldn’t you at least wait to see if I was seduced by this dinner,’ because I never was,” Maher continued. “I went right back to doing my job, which is calling him out on the stuff where I think he is very wrong, and there’s a long list of it.”

Of course whether or not criticizing the president on TV while privately sharing friendly texts off-camera counts as being “seduced” is certainly debatable. But from the sounds of it, Trump's feelings were hurt by Maher’s criticisms, now that the two have dined together.

“He’s yelling at me about how ‘I guess you forgot our dinner’ and you know, ‘You’ve been captured by the lunatic left,’” Maher recalled. “And I said, I wrote back, always respectfully, ‘How could I forget about our dinner? The people who hate me for it, never let me forget it, one fucking day. So I could not have forgotten about it. But you know what? I’m not going to stop doing my job.’ And, you know, he gets it. At least for me he does.”

“I said to your father-in-law in the text, it’s like, ‘If I’m so captured by the lunatic left, why do they hate me too?’” Maher later told Lara Trump, further explaining that the two are still on good terms. “It did not end nasty or ‘I’m cutting you off,’” the comedian bragged.

Maher also recounted that Trump previously confronted him over his 2013 joke about donating $5 million to charity if the Home Alone 2-ruiner could prove that he wasn’t the “the spawn of his mother having sex with an orangutan” (which inspired Trump to sue Maher).

“I’ve never said this publicly, but it’s true,” Maher stated. “We went into the little merch room after the Oval Office, and he started yelling at me about the bit I did many years ago about the orangutan… and I did not say ‘sorry’ because it was a (satirical) response to his demanding Obama’s birth certificate, which I thought was wrong and racist and not cool."

“And, you know, he absolutely accepted that," Maher continued, ”And then I said, but you know what, I’ll also admit – not that one – but yes, have I taken some cheap shots? I have. And that’s not necessary.”

“Since then, no jokes about his weight, no jokes about his hair, his makeup, Melania. I have enough on my plate with the policy,” Maher stressed.

Well at least Bill wasn’t “seduced” by his new text buddy.
