Here’s A Reminder That Ricky Gervais Absolutely Uses His Celebrity Status to Push His Politics
After Ricky Gervais condescendingly called out this past weekend’s Emmy-winners who used their acceptance speeches to advocate for political causes, he received so much ridicule that he deleted the offending tweet — but it wasn’t nearly enough.
For the last few years, every time awards season rolls around and some comedian other than Gervais gets the opportunity to host one of the various A-list events celebrating TV and movie professionals, the five-time Golden Globes master-of-ceremonies hops in the bathtub and opens up Twitter to remind everyone that he, too, would like attention, and he deserves it so much more than whoever is in the spotlight that night. When Nikki Glaser brought the house down at the most recent Golden Globes, Gervais posted all the jokes that he would have told if he had landed his sixth hosting gig, proving to everyone that, this year, the Golden Globes finally made the right choice.
Then, this past Monday, in the aftermath of the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards, Gervais took to Twitter and quoted one of his own famous Golden Globe rants in which he warned all social-justice-minded nominees not to use their acceptance speeches to speak out on serious world issues. During the monologue, Gervais told the illustrious audience, “You’re in no position to lecture the public about anything, you know nothing about the real world.”

Anyways, here’s Gervais using his position as a celebrity to lecture the public about the serious real-world issue of Spanish bull-fighting:
Yes, for years, Gervais, a long-time vegan and animal rights activist, has been using his celebrity status to combat cruelty to animals, such as the above advert in which he implored his fans and animal-lovers everywhere to help him sway a vote in Catalonian parliament. Now, obviously, the sport of bullfighting is a cruel, barbaric and archaic practice, but it’s hard to see how Gervais could possibly square his own public activism with his constant, self-aggrandizing attempts to shame celebrities who stump for their own human-focused pet causes.
But it’s not just in weepy speeches like this one where Gervais tries to shape the world to fit his own views. In fact, that’s kind of been his entire comedy career for the last several stand-up specials. In his two most recent Netflix hours, SuperNature and Armageddon, Gervais took on “trans activist ideology” and cultural sensitivity regarding slurs like the N word, which, beyond being the most tired and worn-out stand-up material for edgelord white guy comedians, are inherently political issues — ones of which Gervais prides himself in being on the wrong side.
Gervais obviously doesn’t have a problem with out-of-touch celebrities giving maudlin speeches in which they tell the public how to feel about real-world issues. He also is clearly in favor of entertainers thrusting themselves into the middle of the most sensitive and divisive discussions on social justice. So, then, when he posts the same six-year-old speech every time someone else hosts an awards show, what is he actually protesting?
If politics have no place at awards shows, then neither does Ricky Gervais.
