Ricky Gervais Deleted Tweets Criticizing Political Emmy Speeches
When Ricky Gervais last hosted the Golden Globes in 2020, he wagged a finger at the star-studded audience and preached from his host pulpit. “If you do win an award tonight, please don’t use it as a platform to make a political speech, right? You’re in no position to lecture the public about anything,” he lectured. “You know nothing about the real world. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg, so if you win, right, come up, accept your little award, thank your agent and your god and fuck off, okay?”
The eff-word was bleeped, of course, and Gervais’ harangue at least didn’t threaten to take charitable dollars away from disadvantaged children. But 2025 Gervais was mad that this week’s Emmy winners didn’t memorize his five-year-old speech, reposting this reminder.
In particular, according to Deadline, Gervais was responding to Hacks star Hannah Einbinder’s controversial acceptance speech for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy. She concluded her thank yous with the bleeped remarks, “Finally, go Birds, fuck ICE and free Palestine. Thank you.”
Don't Miss
In response, Gervais posted another “They’re still not listening” tweet, including a laughing/crying emoji and an extended quote from the 2020 Globes. He later deleted the tweet, according to Deadline.
Gervais also shared, then unshared, another tweet that commented directly on Einbinder’s politics. Variety posted video of Einbinder’s backstage comments about her “obligation as a Jewish person to distinguish Jews from the state of Israel.”
The comment, by @bronzieonx, quoted another choice line from Gervais’ Golden Globes rant: “If ISIS started a streaming service, you’d call your agent, wouldn’t you?”
The comedian took down his retweet this morning, cluttering his feed with reposts of old clips from The Office, his stand-up specials and Extras. And as always, there are incessant plugs for his vodka brand, a perfect pairing for Sunday night awards shows.
Scroll down far enough, and you will find Gervais reposting a video of his 2020 rant, this time without comment or context.
Why did the comic keep up some of his “don’t get political” posts and delete the rest? It’s a question best pondered over a shot of Dutch Barn Vodka.
