‘Modern Family’ Fans Are Stunned to Discover That Cameron Tucker Is Actually Straight and Married to a Woman

Five years after Modern Family’s series finale, fans of the beloved sitcom are just now discovering that Cameron and Mitchell’s TV relationship wasn’t only for TV, but that actor Eric Stonestreet isn’t even gay. 

The revelations surrounding Stonestreet’s sexual orientation began on Tuesday, when he revealed that he’d married his longtime girlfriend, Lindsay Schweitzer, at their home in Kansas City the previous day. “It’s my birthday and guess what I got,” Stonestreet captioned several Instagram photos from their nuptials, which took place a day before the actor turned 54.

Stonestreet’s post sparked congratulations and well-wishes, but several Modern Family fans still had questions about the actor’s marital status, namely, as one Twitter user wrote, “He’s not gay!?!?”

“So wait, you’re telling me the guy that played Cam is heterosexual? What an actor, damn,” a fan commented on a post shared to the Modern Family subreddit. 

“I didn’t (know) he was straight,” wrote another poster, taking a moment to commend Stonestreet’s “great” performance. To a third, however, simply seeing one half of the Tucker-Pritchett family in a straight relationship proved surreal. 

“I know he isn’t gay, but it’s still weird to see him with a woman,” they added. 

This isn’t the first time Stonestreet’s straightness has sparked questions. Early in Modern Family’s run, the actor’s on-screen husband, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, recalled what it was like acting alongside a straight man, telling the late James Lipton that he and his TV spouse often joked about Stonestreet’s “gay-for-pay” status. “He’s straight in real life, and they pay him X amount of dollars to be gay!” the openly gay actor shared during a 2011 appearance on Inside the Actors Studio. 

While I’m thrilled for Stonestreet and his bride, not everyone is going to be happy about this news. Or as one Redditor put it, “Mitchell’s going to be pissed!”
