Seth Meyers Is Clearly Unafraid to Continue Mocking Trump

He’s clearly not afraid of the president’s ire

Donald Trump took a while to go after Seth Meyers in the same way that he had targeted other late-night talk show hosts. The president was allegedly a catalyst in getting Stephen Colbert fired and getting The Late Show canceled. He goes on semi-regular tirades against both Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon. But he finally set the Late Night host in his sights while Meyers was on vacation.

It hasn’t seemed to deter Meyers from taking softer punches at Trump. When we all thought that the president was dead for 24 hours, Meyers delivered some of the toughest blows about the celebration of his rumored demise. Now, Meyers is still sparing no jokes for nonstop hits on the most recent news regarding Trump, which includes but is certainly not limited to: the reveal of the birthday card he sent to Jeffrey Epstein, his threat to napalm Chicago via A.I.-generated meme, and changing the name of the Department of Defense to the Department of War.

Meyers started his “Closer Look” segment with a montage of Trumpers like JD Vance and Donald Trump Jr. calling Trump “the president of peace,” on the campaign trail. Trump, before he was elected president for the second time, was bursting with promises of ending wars and bringing prosperity around. Unsurprisingly, that’s not what happened.

“It’s so crazy to call one of the world’s most annoying loudmouths the candidate of peace,” Meyers said. “One thing Donald Trump has never given anyone is peace. He never shuts up. After his first term ended, I thought we were free. And then he talked all the way through Biden’s term. I’m so used to hearing this man’s voice, I can’t fall asleep without it.”

He went on to make fun of Pete Hegseth’s atrocious Dr. Seuss-style poetry announcing the change of the Department of War and Trump’s endless contradictory statements regarding everything from his own health to his intentions of sending the National Guard into Chicago. “Also, you want us to listen to you, but you never listen to us,” Meyers continued. “In fact, it’s so rare for Trump to go a day without talking that when he does go quiet, it immediately sparks rumors about his health, which also seems to piss him off.”

Then, we cut to a clip of Trump throwing a temper tantrum because we all thought he was dead for a little while and celebrated the potential of such a reality. It seems to bother Trump that we’re all aware of his increasingly fragile morality and he wants everyone to just stop talking about his swollen ankles, bruised hands and declining cognitive state. But that’s too bad, because a) it’s impossible not to notice; and b) it’s so, so, so much fun to pick on the weaknesses of the most powerful and destructive man in the world.

Meyers ended with an additional dig at Trump’s pending demise: “Trump doesn’t just want to intimidate enemies abroad. He wants to cow his opponents into submission here at home. At the same time, he doesn’t seem to remember the things he says or does on a daily basis, or where he is or where he just came from. Physically, he may still be the president, but mentally speaking — Trump is no longer with us.”
