Donald Trump Finally Went After Seth Meyers
If you can navigate past the flashing nicotine advertisements that plague Truth Social, you will be able to see that President Donald Trump has finally gone after Seth Meyers. It’s a bit wild that it’s taken this long for Trump to target Meyers, when the president has spent most of the summer attacking the other network late-night hosts.
First, he went after Stephen Colbert — and depending on who you believe, had a hand in getting Colbert and The Late Show taken off the air. Then he started targeting Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel, calling them things like “talentless” and “losers.” And so, it seemed like he was intentionally leaving out Seth Meyers.
If Trump was avoiding going after Meyers, it wouldn’t be too much of a surprise. Some people credit Meyers with pushing Trump to run for president after such a brutal roast at the 2011 White House Correspondents’ Dinner. And of all the jokes made against Trump, Meyers has been the least forgiving. Maybe Trump didn’t want to poke the bear. But now Trump is no longer leaving out the latest late-night show host.
Don't Miss
“There is a sick rumor going around that Fake News NBC extended the contract of one of the least talented Late Night television hosts out there, Seth Meyers,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “He has no Ratings, Talent, or Intelligence, and the Personality of an insecure child. So, why would Fake News NBC extend this dope’s contract. I don’t know, but I’ll definitely be finding out!!!”
That’s the stuff — all insults partially capitalized, a threat, an accusation of fake news against the mainstream media. It’s Trump in peak form. “Personality of an insecure child,” is really gold. That’s perfect observational cruelty — because yeah, in order to helm a late-night television show for years, there has to be an insecure child inside of you, clamoring for validation. He might be an evil idiot, but Trump has the insult instincts of a mother obsessed with her daughter’s weight.
Luckily, I don’t think Trump has as much leverage over NBC as he did Paramount and CBS, so these threats of investigating the “dope’s” contract don’t carry as much weight. But we have seen that catering to Trump and his followers has been something NBC, and late night in particular, is willing to do.
Just a few weeks ago, Jimmy Fallon brought on Greg Gutfeld, the host of Fox News’ Gutfeld! Unfortunately, that proved to be the highest night of ratings for Fallon in years. So while Trump might not be able to bully the network like he was able to bully CBS, NBC has shown a willingness to reach across the aisle and has experienced success in doing so.
But Meyers isn’t Fallon, so he’ll likely continue his acerbic nightly attacks on Trump regardless of what the president threatens.
