Day Drinking with Seth Meyers Is the Most Delightful Segment on Late Night

Meyers drinking with Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers was pure pleasure

To whoever decided to release the newest Day Drinking with Seth Meyers on the same night as Jimmy Kimmel making his triumphant return: that’s an astounding amount of confidence. But, I get it. Unlike other segments swirling around late-night programming, you can take Meyers’ drunken playtime with beloved celebrities to the bank. It’s always a good time, and his latest episode with Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang is no exception.

The Las Culturistas hosts started off by chugging beer, then margaritas made with a bunch of different celebrity alcohols. The fun only continued when Yang and Rogers shed their outer shirts, to sport their tank tops. “I hope this is okay. Thank you, bitches,” a very drunk Meyers said.

In all, it was a really fun, mildly saucy 17 minutes of three guys getting very, very drunk. Rogers and Yang are almost always entertaining, whether they’re guests on other shows or helming their own podcast. One could credit the success of this segment to their charm — at one point Yang recited the following words without breaking:

“Today’s episode is brought to you by HolesAndPoles.net, your one-stop shop for MILFs, DILFs, 18-plus amateur action, softcore, hardcore, Asian flirting, squirting, and Mormon grandmas, Orthodox Jewish stepdads, docile convent nuns, wet and messy, dry and clean, food stuff, foot stuff, fecal stuff, Bob's Burgers, hentai, creampie and Denise Richards and Neve Campbell from Wild Things.”

But as spectacular as Yang and Rogers are, credit is due to Meyers and his team. They put together a truly perfect series of games, including one where Yang and Rogers were only given one note to identify a famous pop song. Yang and Rogers hit it out of the park. Nor is this specific and clever production limited to this episode of Day Drinking.

From guest selection to the writing to Meyers’ ability to get absolutely trashed pretty quickly, every iteration of the segment has been fun. There was his improv-ing with Paul Rudd, watching Julia Louis-Dreyfus getting hotter and meaner (thus, even hotter), making Kristen Stewart break repeatedly, admitting to Dua Lipa that the British shouldn’t have American TV shows or simply boozing it up with Rihanna.

I would give a pinky finger to spend an afternoon drinking with any of the women listed above, and I suspect Meyers selects his guests for similar reasons. Tina Fey even once called him out on creating the perfect segment to escape the trappings of his normal life as a married man with three kids. While I remain envious I don’t get to participate, I do feel grateful that I get this genuinely voyeuristic look into what drinking with hot celebrities is like.

That’s what makes it the best late-night segment on television. Meyers’ is giving us access to famous people we normies wouldn’t have otherwise; it gives the sensation of a real peak behind the curtain as opposed to the perfectly curated PR answers that have come to define most celebrity interviews. A sliver of authenticity in a sea of too polished press tours.

Cheers to that. Just make sure to hydrate, Seth.
