And when you get to be 60, and you've lived through it all, from thinking V'Ger was the coolest thing since VM/CMS, and drooling over the bald lady, all the way to thinking 7 of 9 could never be out-done in terms of eyeball-melting hotness, until you saw T'Pol who was both hot and Vulcan, despite the fact that Enterprise was the abomination of desolation, and realize that you weep every time you think of "The Inner Light," and wish you could somehow slingshot yourself around the sun into the 24th century where the accumulation of wealth is no longer one of humanity's driving forces, not to mention rustling yourself up a thick filet mignon and some Romulan ale out of the synthesizer, and then turn around and look the other direction and realize that you've just had a nerdgasm thinking that piloting a rattletrap piece of junk like the Millennium Falcon from one star system to another in under 12 parsecs (haha) and that all of these things make your own life here on earth look pretty boring and pathetic by comparison and realize that it really doesn't matter which show is better or worse because it's all jolly old escapism, and you forget where the hell you were going with all of this, but who cares because even the most convoluted episode of Enterprise is better than most of the crap they dish up these days. Except for Fringe.
ReplyJust looked down the comments list. I wish my assumption had been wrong. I really wish that. Great comic though. Good laugh.
ReplyWe knew your assumption was wrong the second you didn't tell us what it was.
Heres how it really is...
ReplyStar Wars: Six movies about 2 hours each = 12 hours of stuff to build a fan base off. Of the six movies; all of the prequals are trash, "return of the jedi" is muppet trash, "a new hope" is full of holes but is a decent movie, "empire strikes back is also decent".
Star wars total = garbage (because) Two decent movies do not add up to one great movie Star wars sucks on the whole and even its maker is tired of it (most likly because he knows he is a nerd junk dealer)
Star trek:
11 movies; of which 6 are from the original seris. In those movies five are crap and one is decent. Four are from the next generation; all of those movies are crap. The last movie is a reboot that changes the original origin story. would be ok if it wasnt star trek but being a star trek story trying to make the original seris cool fails.
star trek total = mega dino turd...But wait!!
Star trek also has five tv seris from which to base a fan base from... so over time for star trek...
Star trek original = crap. (because it was a time statement show in space and it was cancelled and it was just cheap)
Star trek Enterprise = Crap.(because it failed to make it the seven years all the modern star treks made it and it proved that no one cares about star trek out side of the next generation.)
Star trek TNG and DS9 and Voyager = exellent show. (Because lets face it all three of these are really st tng just differnt places. Star Trek didn't only make it seven years but spinned of two other seris that ran for seven years. Returning cast members and same time period set all these shows as nerd gold to bad the movies all stank.)
so back to the total
Star Trek = ok. (one movie out of eleven being crap and two stink bomb seris but it gets saved by an exellent run of one show and two spin offs.
Side note:
star trek Hundreds of hours of show history to nerd out on. star wars 12 hours to nerd out on
Biggest waste of life award goes to star wars. looking up thing from books and cartoons to add to your fan base makes you just a waste of space. you have 12 hours of information, 4 that are worth while not enough to base a life on so kill your self
runner up star trek because you have all that history and you spend your free time learning it to the point of knowing a tv made up language. Also kill your self. too every one else who is not a nut and lets tv shows and movies come and go and like they should enjoy your night.
Dude....(sigh)
Eat a dick.
This is comparing the original Star Trek to the "new" Star Wars.
ReplyNot fair.
How about we compare some of the later Star Trek sequels to the original Star Wars?
THIS JOKE ISN'T FAIR!!!!!!!! RAGEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
...how was his comment rage-y? I thought it was kind of a reasonable hypothesis. Classic "Star Wars" vs DS9...even I might have a hard time making that call. Damn. (In case those choices there aren't obvious, I'll take political intrigue with fantasy elements over hard sci-fi any day.)
Strawmen
ReplyNot saying anything on the quality of the catchphrase but 'live long and prosper' is certain to get you more weird looks then 'may the force be with you'. Even people who have never seen Star Wars know 'may the force be with you'.
Reply Hide All See All 4 RepliesBut 'Live long and prosper' works without a reference. Regardless of who said it first, you're expressing hope they enjoy a happy long life.
On the other hand, 'May The Force be with you' only works in the context of Star Wars, which makes it more nerdy even if it's more recognizable. And in a post-SW prequel world, you're wishing they have an organism living in their blood.
Yeah, go ahead and say "live long and prosper" to just anybody on the street. No one is gonna think you're not a mental patient. Or a complete dork who talks like he's looking for the Ren Fair.
"May the Force be with you" is pretty nerdy, but Star Wars is mainstream enough that people who aren't fans will still recognize the reference and won't necessarily think you're a total dweeb.
Pro-tip: Saying either "live long and prosper" or "may the force be with you" to ANYONE AT ALL outside of your respective fan bases makes you a complete tool who doesn't understand normal human interaction.
Most people have at least seen an episode or two of ST:TOS by now, @boopinout - so "Live Long and Prosper" isn't as esoteric as you may think. Even if they haven't, that's it's Spock's catchphrase has entered the culture at large by now, which is how popular TREK has become....
Now - "Ivanova is God. Ivanova is always right."? That will let you weird looks from most people.
awesome!:D
Replystar wars ,it is great.really cool !!!!
Replydating tall girl/ boy : &&&& tall chat &&&&&&
i love sw, But this ownes
ReplyI think it's just a bit of a joke.
Really, this article brings us nowhere. Gwack. Star Wars vs. Star Trek... a buck for every time this argument has been gone over. The truth is there is no answer, mostly because these franchises have nothing in common except they are sci-fi. Star Trek is thought-provoking, with many references to philosophy. Meanwhile, Star Wars has great designs (and costumes) and ground breaking special effects. Which of these do you prefer? You make the choice. Not the article.
ReplyI agree that they have nothing in common, except that Star Trek is Sci-Fi, Star Wars is Science-Fantasy. That's what really makes them incomparable.
I think it's meant to be a bit of a joke.
George Takei just settled this debate :)
Reply Hide All See All 4 RepliesIt's okay to be Takei.
Yes, let us band together and destroy that one true enemy of both Star Trek and Star Wars!
Twilight.
Am I the only one that read "It's okay to be Takei" in George Takei's voice.
OOOOH MYYYYY...
This is great!

ReplyI couldn't agree more.
I growed up with a father that was both a star wars and star treek fan(*gasp* how could HE), wich means I enjoy both, and I find this petty fights pretty much stupid, including your "Oh star treek its better but ill call it a objetive analysis" cartoon *drudur*
ReplyIt's a joke, I like both and I find it funny. It's just having a bit of fun and it's not meant to be a legitimate argument. By taking it seriously your completely overriding any logic involved and acting more like a fanboy than you could even imagine.
Also are you missing a couple of fingers? Because you spell like your typing with your face.
It's refreshing to see a comparison which doesn't hinge on "which one is better". They both have flaws, they're both enjoyable as entertainment (to greater and lesser extents depending on the series/trilogy being discussed...), and they've both had their impacts on modern culture. The internet needed this. Also: no one ever told Shatner that being a starship captain and being Hamlet were two different things, and by the time he figured it out everyone was already used to his crap :p .

This one constantly says Star Trek is better, or at least less bad...?
no it doesn't this comic constantly pokes fun at both... for a comic titled "star trek x 100 = star wars" it was surprisingly objective
squab is right. when you say this aspect of trek sucks but the same aspect of star wars sucks 100 times more you are saying trek is better.
The comments section is, predictably, much more entertaining than the actual article :D
ReplyAn episode of Voyager called "Threshold". In the words of Brannon Braga (you know, the episode's writer)"That's a real low point [....] It really backfired on me. It was poorly executed by me."
Reply Hide All See All 5 Replies...and I didn't mean this comment to go here. For context, this is a response to the question by KingofMadCows: "Also, what's Star Trek's equivalent of the Star Wars Holiday Special? What's the greatest embarrassment to the Trek franchise?" I'm just retarded and put it in the wrong spot.
It's okay. You've at least successfully made me curious to find out what this episode was about (or if I've seen it), so in my book you still come out ahead.
I believe he referred to it at one point as "a great steaming stinker" but I'd have to find the quote.
Star Trek's greatest embararassment is Star Trek V.
Cmlondon, you could have just left it at "I'm retarded" and still been 100% correct.
The author clearly doesn't like Star Wars....
ReplyDoctor Who beats all.
ReplyI agree, Doctor Who beats off.
