We've all had that moment: You're watching or reading a science fiction thing, and some imaginative piece of technology comes up, and you can't help but wonder what it would be like to have access to something like it in the real world. While most of us simply sit and daydream about these ideas, others out there have gone and tried to make those fantasies a reality. That cool holographic screen from Minority Report? Of course people at MIT were going to try to make it a thing. Countless nerds who had their imaginations set on fire by Star Wars and Star Trek were OBVIOUSLY going to try to make the fantastic technologies real in our physical space.

Sometimes they work out! Other times they're laughably useless. More often than not, however, our real versions end up more practical and streamlined than the fantasy versions ever did in the first place.
