28 Historical ‘Bad Guys’ Who Weren’t All That Bad

History, and the human figures who made it, is complicated and deeply contextual. Neither of which are things that the modern human brain particularly cares for. Which means that sometimes, we get a broader take on a figure from the past, especially when they’re a hero or a villain.

It’s nice and neat to be able to have goodies and baddies, one wielding a gleaming sword while the other hisses and cowers. Historical battles don’t look like Helm’s Deep, however, where one side are grunting monsters led by a guy who could be on a flash card for the word “evil.”

On Reddit, historians and history buffs alike shared villains of the past who, even if they weren’t perfect angels, were far from the borderline demonic entities they’re sometimes depicted as. See what past rulers the movies did dirty below.

RichardCano 4y ago William Murdoch was the guy who shoots two passengers and then himself in Titanic. In reality, while there were reports of an officer shooting two passengers and then committing suicide, there was nothing confirming it to have been Murdoch. In fact, Murdoch was in charge of launching life boats on the starboard side and had launched more than half of his fully loaded lifeboats before anyone else launched any. No one knows for sure what happened to him aside that he was lost with the ship.
lemihaf 4y ago More so sports history, but the film Cinderella Man portrayed boxer Max Baer as a murderous psychopath who gladly killed two fighters in the ring. In reality, he was personally devastated by these deaths. In the one he was most directly responsible for, he ended up giving his winnings from his next few fights to the fighters family.
Ecofre-33919 . 4y ago Richard III of England is getting a better look. They say he was actually a good king and that after he was deposed it was propaganda that ruined his name.
YourRoyal_thighness . 4y ago Lucrezia Borgia wasn't actually as much of a villainous femme fatale as she was made out to be. I enjoy the character archetype, but she wasn't an example of one.
spoon_shaped_spoon 4y ago Captain William Bligh of the HMS Bounty. Portrayed as a monster in novels and films. Не was actually a well thought of Naval Officer who when forced off his ship sailed a small craft 4000 miles with minimal provisions. When there was no suitable craft available he and his crew then built their own and sailed from East Timor back to England. Не was exonerated by the courts, and had a successful career as Governor of New South Wales.
Bugbrain_04 . 4y ago S Edited 4y ago Paul Reubens. For decades of my life I was under the impression that Pee Wee Herman was guilty of some child-predator shit. But no, dude was just spotted in a porn theater. I don't think the masturbation claims were ever even substantiated. Meaning he lost his career because he legally watched porn in his personal free time.
Notmiefault 4y ago Not a real person but Western media has sort of equated Hades with the Christian Devil, which is very much not who he was in actual Greek Mythology. In fact, he's actually one of the most sober and well-behaved of the Greek gods - the only mischief he ever really gets up to is tricking Persephone into living with him, otherwise he mostly kept to himself and did his job.
skittlkiller57 . 4y ago The lady who sued McDonald's for giving her third degree burns.
xoemily 4y ago Not quite history, but the grim reaper. Grim isn't killing you, he's just keeping you company. He's the buddy system. Also, people outside of Romania hate Vlad the Impaler, but in Romania, he's seen as a hero.
MyUsernamelsAwful 4y ago Khrushchev was actually the bigger man during the Cuban missile crisis. Не initiated the negotiations and even let Kennedy look like the hero by keeping America's side of the bargain secret. Not to mention all the measures he took afterwards to prevent something like it from happening again.
Cougar_Boot . 4y ago Edited 4y ago Brutus. He's gone down as committing one of history's greatest betrayals, but what he actually did was choose his Republican ideals over a man he personally loved (who had sparked a civil war with an illegal invasion of Italy, and was unquestionably acting like an autocrat).
HanaNotBanana 4y ago Edited 4y ago Marie Antoinette. She was far from perfect, yes, but she was shipped away from home at 14 years old to a country that hated pretty much everything about her home land, with an economy that was already starting to fray at the seams. Yes, she lived extravagantly (Being literally the QUEEN and having to keep up appearances), but she was often falsely accused of major fuck-ups that she had nothing to do with. She never said Let them eat cake. She was impersonated and held responsible for one of the most expensive jewelry pieces
cynth81 4y ago Edited 4y ago Anne Boleyn. When the king sets his eyes on you, you don't really get to say no. He'd already had his way with her sister and discarded her and their bastard son. So instead of being another ruined castoff she played her bad hand to the best of her ability and made herself a queen. Eventually Henry got tired of her, which was his МО, after she failed to produce any living sons and he'd already set his sights on Jane. Не needed a viable reason to get rid of her, and what better
MGD109 4y ago The Persian Empire gets a bad rap these days. Now make no mistake the Persians were brutal imperialists and slave traders. But then so was every other empire at the time. The Persian Empire was actually one of the most diverse and culturally accepting empires in human history. Their standard policy of leadership was to allow cultures they took over to retain their own customs, their own laws and even their own leaders. Provided they didn't rebel and paid their taxes on time, they more or less left you alone. Plus all subjects got to benefit from
. 4y ago Edited 4y ago Fred Hampton and the Black Panthers in general. They've been smeared as extremists by the usual suspects for fifty years, but I've read that the Panthers had health clinics, fed the hungry and did a lot more for their community than the fucking cops.
wirt2004 4y ago Cleopatra. A lot of historians for the longest time saw her as Augustus portrayed her. As an evil seductress and ruined perfectly good Romans. It was a lot more complicated and she was a very smart, effective ruler. Was she perfect? No, no one is but she isn't this monster people like to portray her as. Thankfully, this one is changing which is good to hear.
4y ago Draft Dodgers in Vietnam. They have forever been painted as cowards or traitors but let's be honest they didn't believe in the fight/want to die. I am a combat vet myself and it took me alot of years to realize this. Hell I no longer know what the point of Vietnam, Afghanistan, or Iraq were (minus the rich getting richer).
Nervous-Table-9046 4y ago Edited 4y ago Nero has been vilified as an evil tyrant who burned Rome down while he played the lyre, had Christians covered in pitch and set alight to act as torches for his gardens and overall has been portrayed as an insane lunatic who was deeply depraved. Не certainly wasn't a saint, as he did have his own mother murdered, but Nero, like Caligula, were both slandered by the Senatorial class, who despised both of them. Nero was actually relatively well-liked by Roman commoners and while he probably wasn't the best ruler, he is not the
sweetnessalive . 4y ago . Edited 4y ago Monica Lewinsky. She was only 22, and he was the president. Why did we vilify her so hard?
brigan_ . 4y ago Sinéad O'Connor. She was right.
Kit10Zero4 4y ago Medusa. Swore her life and allegiance to a goddess as a temple maiden. Told a god no when he wanted her because 1. She had to remain chaste and 2. Maybe she just doesn't want you babe, dude??? Said douche god responds by sexually assaulting her. To punish Medusa for her crimes, her own goddess turned her into a gorgon. cue my eternal rage fit Homegirl is on an island alone and all these heroes go on quests to slay the monster for glory. She defended herself and is portrayed as a grotesque evil creature.
. 4y ago Tom. Не was just being a cat. Jerry on the other hand, was a massive twat.
blueblarg 4y ago Neville Chamberlain. Не was a clueless politician who naively gave in to appeasing Hitler. OR? Не bought time again and again for the allies to be able to catch up to the German war machine.
Logic_and_Cursing 4y ago Niccolo Machiavelli Machiavellian is complete nonsense when looking at how this dude lived and the messages he was sending in his writing. Не did not respect the Medici family and was critiquing Christianity in a way that went over people's heads. Не wasn't writing an instructional manual on how to be a tyrant, he was subtly detailing how tyrannical the whole system was, and how politics and government and wealthy elites and religion stamp out the good...a problem we still face. We describe him as a smart version of trump when he was actually more of a
Noble06 4y ago The Borgia family are thought to be these scandalous money hoarding monsters. The fact is that generally they were no worse than the average aristocratic renaissance family and often better. What they were was an outsider family from Spain that dominated the Papal court that was typically Italian controlled. This led to a lot of resentment and the spread of exaggerated or false rumors to discredit them. If anyone is interested I recommend The Borgias by G.J. Meyer
Hausgebrauch 4y ago Gengis Khan. Don't get me wrong, he wasn't a saint, but also established a code of conduct that made sexual assault punishable by death, allowed women to own property and fight side by side with his male soldiers, united nomadic Mongol tribes, respected other religions and made it a law to share food with everybody who asked, even if he was an enemy, as long as there was enough for everybody. Also if he was attacking a city, he allowed everybody to leave or join him. Probably the wokest conquerer in history.
Augen76 . 4y ago Cool Runnings, the Swiss were kind and welcoming to the Jamaicans in bob sled. When the film came out the Jamaicans felt bad for how distorted it made the Swiss to be sneering villains.
the_ebagel 4y ago Edited 4y ago Imhotep. Yes, the titular villain from the Mummy was a real guy, but he wasn't a soul-sucking killer who made off with the Pharaoh's wife. In reality, he was a skilled architect and physician who designed the famous Saqqara Step Pyramid (which still stands today). Imhotep is even considered the father of Egyptian medicine, as he oversaw the healthcare of thousands of pyramid-builders and wrote a detailed papyrus manuscript that described different illnesses and their treatments. Even though he wasn't a pharaoh, he was given divining status after death due to his contributions; he
