‘High Potential’ Showrunner Reveals the Show’s Subtle Nods to ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’
You don’t need to match Morgan Gillory’s 160 IQ to uncover all the clues connecting High Potential to It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
Shortly after the show’s Season Two premiere on Tuesday, showrunner Todd Harthan offered a sunny forecast for High Potential’s upcoming episodes, confirming that he, the show’s writers and Kaitlin Olson all did their best to bring bits of Paddy’s Pub to the LAPD.
“There’s a couple of nods and winks here and there, little Easter eggs,” Harthan told Deadline. Though Harthan credits one of High Potential’s writers, who happens to be an Always Sunny fan, with opening the door to these subtle homages, he explained that everyone from co-executive producer Bob Goodman to Olson herself have all found creative ways to shout out the FXX staple.

In fact, Olson has previously speculated that Sweet Dee and Morgan would become instant enemies if they were to ever meet. “Morgan would love that Dee hates her. Dee would actively hate her and just make it her sole focus to try and take Morgan down, and the pair’s feud would ultimately come to blows. Some violence would happen — on both sides,” Olson told the L.A. Times in May. “I think we should film that,” she joked.
Considering the potential violence of an Always Sunny/High Potential crossover, maybe Olson should stick with the Easter eggs.
