Fans Roast Chris Pratt for Screwing Up ‘Garfield’ Sequel Announcement
Legendary filmmakers like John Waters can’t secure funding for new film projects, but at least we’re getting another Garfield movie.
As parents who haven’t already repressed the memory will recall, in 2024, the portly orange feline starred in a big-screen franchise reboot/glorified drone commercial known simply as The Garfield Movie. Controversially, Garfield was voiced by Jurassic World star Chris Pratt whose “jacked evangelical” energy didn’t suit the character at all.
Don't Miss
Despite the online casting backlash, The Garfield Movie was a big hit, and is now predictably getting the sequel treatment. But instead of just announcing the next movie via a boring old press release, Pratt himself dropped the news with a social media video in which he brings home a pizza with “Garfield 2” drizzled on top — yes, you read that right, a pizza.
People were quick to dunk on Pratt for using pizza for the video instead of Garfield’s favorite dish, which everyone knows is lasagna. This is a little like announcing a new Popeye movie by popping open a can of creamed corn.
The last movie made more than $230 million at the global box office, and they couldn’t find a way to pay for a custom lasagna for the sequel announcement?
This odd decision is somewhat reminiscent of the doomed Canadian Garfield-themed restaurant, which did serve lasagna, but widely promoted their Garfield-shaped pizzas. That said, even the GarfieldEATS social media account, which is still active for some reason, took the opportunity to roast Pratt:
Some fans did defend Pratt, pointing out that Garfield is a lover of all Italian cuisine. The previous movie found Garfield and Jon Arbuckle first bonding over a pepperoni pie, not to mention how there was one comic strip in which Garfield withered and died while waiting for a pizza delivery.
And, to be fair, Garfield has been associated with a number of different foods over the years. He even had his own line of macaroni and cheese dinners, which were at least better than the Dilbert-themed burritos that caused violent diarrhea.
Moreover, Garfield has been known to eat sandwiches that are in no way Italian in origin.
X/Twitter users even added a community note to one critical post, clarifying that Garfield enjoys a variety of foods, including cookies, donuts and pie. The note goes as far as to suggest that Garfield ate more pizza than lasagna in the original comic strip.
Still, it’s pretty undeniable that his go-to favorite is widely accepted to be lasagna. The only way that Pratt could have fumbled this announcement more would have been if he’d done it on a Monday.
