This Is the ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ Joke That Fans Ask Danny DeVito About the Most

Frank Reynolds may be best known for wielding his toe knife, founding Frank’s Fluids, serving as the resident man-cheetah of Paddy’s Pub and lugging around magnum condoms for his massive dong, but to America’s youth, he’s so much more: He’s also the “Rum Ham guy.”

FX(X) star Danny DeVito recently opened up about his character’s boozy bit while hitting the red carpet during It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s 20th anniversary celebration in Los Angeles last week, telling Decider that the now-legendary joke from Season Seven’s “The Gang Goes to the Jersey Shore,” has stood the test of time, especially among the show’s younger viewers.

“I think rum ham is the iconic (sic), has gone through very many iterations of the zeitgeist of the public,” DeVito recalled during the event last Tuesday when asked about which jokes fans bring up to him the most.

Taking a moment to honor his character’s famously chaotic antics — “I like a lot of the crazy stuff that Frank does,” he explained — the 2011 episode has managed to serve as a defining moment for not just DeVito, but for the show as a whole.

“A lot of kids talk about me coming out of the couch naked,” he continued, referencing his now-notorious stunt for Season Six’s “A Very Sunny Christmas.” “But I think rum ham was the one.”

This isn’t the first time DeVito has expressed his appreciation for the meaty joke. Back in 2019, he recalled the “really cray” (sic) day they shot the scene, recalling just how much he enjoyed taking a dip with his liquor-soaked snack.

“We were in that raft and the ham got out and it was floating away,” he remembered of filming the scene alongside his co-star, Rob Mac. “It was so cool. We had lots of fun.”

But his memories weren’t the only sweet reminder of the shoot, as he left the set with a new — and surprisingly “good” — boozy recipe. “If you soak ham in rum, it’s very good,” he maintained. “It’s not good for the pig, but it’s very good for you!”
