Longtime Friends Billy Crystal and Larry David Arrived On The Scene of Rob Reiner & Michele Singer Tragedy

The comedy legends checked on the late director shortly after his death

Last night, the violent deaths of film legend Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer shocked the world of entertainment, especially those closest to the couple.

Right now, the Los Angeles Police Department is holding Nick Reiner, 32, on bail, with Los Angeles police chief Jim McDonnell announcing that the suspect was “booked for murder” following the stabbing death of his famous father and mother. The Los Angeles Fire Department found Reiner and Singer dead in their Brentwood home with numerous stab wounds, with law enforcement officials swiftly apprehending the pair’s son in connection to the crime.

According to PEOPLE, there were also a couple of non-emergency professionals who came to Reiner and Singer's house in the hours following their deaths: Billy Crystal and Larry David, both long-time friends and collaborators of Reiner's.

Crystal, of course, collaborated with Reiner on the iconic 1989 romantic comedy film When Harry Met Sally, but their friendship began in 1975 when Crystal appeared on an episode of All in the Family, starring Reiner. Crystal reflected on his “Bromance of Four Decades” back in 2016 with a guest column for The Hollywood Reporter.

“What impressed me the most about Rob was, one, he was so genial, but two, he was so smart,” Crystal said of his earliest memories of Reiner while working together on the sitcom, “He was so smart and so accurate and funny at the same time. And he was a terrific actor as well. It’s a very impressive combination of talents that I first met — plus, he was just hilarious.”

Crystal and Reiner immediately developed what would become a half-century of chemistry, as Crystal recalled, “We became the closest of friends. And when I moved out here, we just spent all kinds of time together.” On the topic of Reiner's high-profile political advocacy work, Crystal praised, “He has a great sense of humor but also a wonderful heart, and he tries to accomplish things that have social importance.”

Reiner also appeared as a comedically dramatized version of himself on David's sitcom Curb Your Enthusiasm, in which he introduces a key piece of the Curb canon when he convinces Larry to help out with a charity event meant to benefit the fictional (seeming) Groat's disease.

Now, as law enforcement officials sort out the events of Reiner and Singer's deaths and administer justice, the entire world of comedy and cinema mourns the legendary artist, while other legends like David and Crystal mourn their dear friend.
