The Same Fans That Kept James Corden Out of ‘Wicked’ Want to Block Sydney Sweeney From ‘Mamma Mia 3’

It’s worth a try

The first Wicked movie was a critical and commercial hit, so it’s no surprise that the follow-up, Wicked: For Good, is expected to be another box office smash. And for a lot of fans, the big screen musical’s success owes to a distinct lack of James Corden.

When Universal Pictures first announced that they were going to adapt the beloved Broadway musical Wicked for the big screen, concerned citizens launched a petition to “Keep James Corden out of the Wicked movie.”

Their objection to Corden wasn't just because of his annoying onscreen persona and/or his reputation for being a total dick to non-celebritiesAs we’ve mentioned before, Corden previously appeared in a number of sub-par movie musicals, from the lackluster Into the Woods, to the crime against humanity known as Cats.

Despite a close call involving the Cowardly LionWicked has remained a Corden-free franchise. And now, some folks are seemingly hoping for a similar result with another popular musical series that could feature an actor who rubs much of the country the wrong way.

While chatting with Entertainment Tonight at the recent Governors Awards, Amanda Seyfried revealed that a third Mamma Mia! movie is pretty much a “done deal,” despite the fact that the second instalment in the ABBA-based musical franchise broke all of our brains by defying the laws of temporal physics and including literal ghosts.

“I love portraying a mum, so I would love to see Sophie with her kids,” Seyfried told ET. “Maybe she has a cousin she hasn’t seen in a while, and that could be Sabrina Carpenter. And then Sydney Sweeney could show up. There’s a bunch of girls that really want to be a part of it, and I’m all for it.”

Judging from the online response, a lot of fans aren’t down with the “Sydney Sweeney could show up” part of Seyfried’s impromptu pitch. After all, the Euphoria star recently went viral for declining to comment on the controversy surrounding her arguably eugenics-coded American Eagle ad campaign during an awkward GQ interview.

This might be the most uncomfortable clip of Sydney Sweeney, even more than the time she straight-up copied Mr. Bean.

Now, some folks are hoping that the same grassroots efforts that may or may not have prevented Corden from being in Wicked could prohibit Sweeney’s potential Mamma Mia! role.

And, to be honest, Sweeney's recent Christy press tour was just as big of a disaster as Cats.
