John Cleese Admits That No One Can Figure Out His Confusing Politics

And newspapers are to blame, apparently

In addition to Eric Idle, a whole lot of people seem to be pissed off at John Cleese.

A big reason why the Fawlty Towers star tends to elicit so much hostility these days is because he has a unique talent for routinely spouting political and cultural viewpoints that manage to piss off both sides of the political spectrum.

In many ways, Cleese has spent his golden years reinforcing the viewpoints of the far right. For instance, he has been a vocal critic of cancel culture, even going so far as to invent non-existent cancellations to prove his point. Cleese also hosted a political talk show on the U.K.’s Fox News equivalent, GB News. The Dinosaur Hour found Cleese regularly raging against the perils of “wokeism” with respected intellectuals like Rob Schneider.

But on the other hand, despite his past attempts to quit Twitter, Cleese’s account is full of vehemently anti-Trump posts. Earlier this year he took heat for making threatening comments about Stephen Miller and the comedian previously sparked controversy after listing “five ways Hitler was preferable to Trump.”

Now Cleese has just made it clear that he’s aware of why so many folks are angry at him (sort of).

Cleese recently appeared on iTV’s This Morning – thankfully keeping his feet inside their shoes the entire time – to promote the upcoming documentary John Cleese Packs it In. “What I like about (the film) is, when you’re well-known, you sometimes don’t really know what people think about you,” Cleese explained. “I have a friend called Matthew Syed, a wonderful writer, and I said to him the other day, ‘What’s my problem?’ And he said, ‘Well, people on the right think you’re on the left, and people on the left think you’re on the right.’”

But Cleese didn’t believe that his public statements were to blame for this perception, instead he suggested that the real problem was the news media. “That’s because of the portrait that’s been (painted) by newspapers over the years, which have not been very friendly a lot of the time,” Cleese unconvincingly argued. “Because I criticize our newspapers, which are of course, absolutely awful.”

It’s too bad that John Cleese hates Donald Trump so much, because they sure do seem to have a lot in common.
