‘South Park’ Fans Debate Which Song Was the Show’s Best

It’s tough to choose

There’s obviously more to South Park than just bad words and presidential dick jokes. For example, it’s featured a ton of original music over the past several decades, a number of which were performed by Trey Parker, Matt Stone and special guests during the show’s 25th anniversary concert back in 2022.

Recently, fans on Reddit have been debating which South Park song represents the musical high point of the series, with the original poster implying that it might be “(What What) in the Butt,” as performed by Butters in the Season 12 episode “Canada on Strike.”

But a number of commenters pointed out that this song actually predated South Park, originating in the music video by Samwell that went viral. Incidentally, the company behind the video, the aptly-named Brownmark Films, sued Comedy Central’s then-parent company Viacom over the episode, although the case was promptly dismissed after the judge found that it was fair use.

Some South Park Redditors voted for “Jackin’ it in San Diego” from Season 16’s “Butterballs,” which is, admittedly, very catchy.

A number of people threw their support behind songs from the music-heavy movie South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, including the Oscar-nominated “Blame Canada” and the definitely not Oscar-nominated “Uncle Fucker.” Also, “Kyle’s Mom’s a Bitch,” although that one predated the film, and was first performed by Cartman in “Mr. Hankey, the Christmas Poo.”

And when it comes to earworm tunes, you really can’t beat “Fingerbang” by the kids’ ill-fated boy band Fingerbang.

Of course, “Gay Fish” got a mention, possibly because it’s the only Kanye song that people feel like listening to right now.

Fans also mentioned songs such as Cartman’s “Make It Right,” Timmy’s “Timmy and the Lords of the Underworld” and Russell Crowe’s “Fightin’ Round the World” — the latter arguably being far preferable to any of the the real-world music made by the Cinderella Man star.

And how did only two people bring up the banger that is the “Montage” song?

The fact that there is no clear-cut answer to this debate, or even an obvious frontrunner, is a testament to the show’s musical legacy. And since the show will probably outlive us all, there may be more songs to come.
