Bill Maher Somehow Seems Like the Worst Person in Woody Allen Interview

The ‘Club Random’ host is outpacing a known weirdo for bad vibes

Woody Allen, a man who married his own step-daughter when she was just 22 years old and he was in his late 50s, doesn’t seem like the creepiest or least pleasant person in the room during his recent interview with Bill Maher on the Club Random podcast. This doesn’t mean that Allen doesn’t come off as creepy; it’s simply that Maher seems like the worse person between the two.

While it might seem a bit shocking that Allen was even guesting on Maher’s podcast in the first place, those who have had the misfortune of following Maher’s antics will know that it’s the logical endpoint of his avid defense of Allen. Back in 2024 Maher told Katie Couric that the actors who expressed regret for working with Allen were “a bunch of pussies” and that he didn’t “think he committed that crime.”

To hear Maher tell it, you’d think that the allegations of Allen molesting his step-children in the 1990s — or the resurfacing of the allegations in the 2010s — totally ended Allen’s career. This is what he told Couric. That it was just some big media witch hunt for a guy he believed was totally innocent. To Maher, Allen is Sarah Good.

In the 90-minute episode of Club Random that was posted to YouTube on Monday, Maher repeatedly tried to get Allen to endorse Maher’s crusade against the actors and media who “ruined his career.” But Allen really didn’t seem too bothered by the whole situation. When Maher repeatedly tried to bait Allen into getting angry at Greta Gerwig and Timothée Chalamet for speaking out about their regrets for working with Allen, his response was essentially “meh.”

“I’ve had a good time working with both of them,” Allen explained. “And they think that they’re doing something honorable or helpful, but they’re not.”

To this relatively measured (if not full of shit) response, Maher cried: “They’re sheep!”

It’s telling that Allen is able to recognize that his career wasn’t in any significant way hindered by the allegations that he was a pedophile molesting and grooming children he was meant to care for while Maher is not. And Allen is right: He wrote and directed numerous Oscar-nominated and Oscar-winning films since the accusations first surfaced and for nearly two decades after the fact.

Allen’s relatively chill response makes him seem like a gentle pervert compared to Maher’s rage-baiting, aggressive interview style. Maher’s in such rabid form that even fans of the show called for him to stop talking. A brief sampling of the comments on the YouTube video:

  • “My dear Bill, with all my heartfelt admiration please listen to this: LET YOUR GUESTS TALK!!!!!!!”
  • “What an opportunity to interview Woody Allen and not let him talk. You blew it Bill.
  • “Bill should simply sit in front of a mirror and interview himself.”
  • “Woody Allen finally gets the chance to interview Bill Maher.”

In all the time he spent talking over Allen, Maher never noticed that it’s weird for Allen to be more aware that he made it out of the #MeToo movement relatively unscathed than the person interviewing him. As someone who says he’s really against people who “overlook child-fucking,” Maher spends much more of his time coming to the public defense of people accused of said child-fucking rather than denouncing it. He’s always trying to point out the logical fallacies of those who speak out against sexual abuse, while making space to victimize the alleged perpetrators. In Maher’s brain, people are only bringing up allegations of abuse when they have an ulterior motive. That ultimately says more about the Real Time host than it does his targets.

Allen probably doesn’t appreciate Maher projecting his own fears of career-sabotage-via-credible-allegations onto his own long and storied success in Hollywood. Allen’s life is probably incredible. In fact, the worst part of being Woody Allen in 2025 is definitely insisting to Bill Maher that it doesn’t suck to be Woody Allen.
