A story’s tone is critical when it comes to what we take away from it. As we all know from that viral trailer of The Shining recut as a romantic comedy, anything can be lighthearted if you play enough Peter Gabriel over it. In fact, that kid from The Shining didn’t even know he was in a horror movie because nobody told him what he was filming was supposed to be scary.

That might be the problem with some movies that didn’t live up to their potential — they just weren’t the right genre. “For example, remaking My Super Ex-Girlfriend as a straight horror would be one of the few novel and terrifying ways to do an evil Superman story,” Redditor Ikacprzak told r/Movies.
