The Lord of the Rings is, obviously, the godfather of all fantasy properties. Sure, we may have seen things like wizards, brave knights, elves, and dwarves in stories in the past… But J.R.R Tolkien was the guy who took all of these fairy tale ideas, and applied them to a fully homebrewed mythology that sometimes makes more sense than the physical world we actually live in. A big evil eye that can be destroyed when a couple little dudes and their gremlin frenemy drop a ring into a volcano that's actually called ‘Mt. Doom’?

Seriously, it makes about as much sense as anything else these days.

There are so many interesting things about the world of The Lord of the Rings, and the real world that has tried to make the Lord of the Rings a reality… on film at least. Here are some of our favorite facts about Tolkien's mythology and Peter Jackson's adaptations.
