29 Secretive Bits of Trivia Hiding in Your Favorite Movies and TV Shows

We love a good treasure hunt. Even on a random hike with the family, we keep our eyes peeled for any X’s that might be lying around. So when the Cracked higher-ups tasked us with tracking down some Easter eggs in movies and TV shows, we started salivating — for real. It was pretty gross. 

After we mopped up the drool spill in their office, we got right to work. Actually, we better get a wet floor sign first.

Rogue One

Rogue One snuck unused Star Wars footage into its big battle scene. When the rebel backups arrive during the climactic battle scene, there's some footage from A New Hope added to the sequence. Director Gareth Edwards stumbled upon a bunch of Star Wars film cans and, while going through them, realized they were unused. Не decided to add the footage where the X-Wing pilots exchanged their call signs to his movie. CRACKED.COM

Us

The opening scene of Us features references to movies that all pertain to the themes in the film. CAL NEWS TONIGHT C.H.U.D. STORM DAVENPORT WARNING SANTA CELLZ RIO DEL MAR L MOSS LANDING AT 11 The movie begins with a television screen surrounded by VHS tapes of movies including C.H.U.D., The Goonies, The Man With Two Brains, and A Nightmare on Elm Street. Undewater

H.P. Lovecraft's original Cthulhu sketch appears in Underwater. - DRILL When Norah goes through Lucien's locker, she discovers drawings he had made concerning the underwater drilling site. Lovecraft's sketch of Cthulhu can be seen among them. CRACKED.COM

The Mandalorian

Bryce Dallas Howard paid homage to her dad in The Mandalorian by including a sequence mirroring Apollo 13. In Chapter 11: The Heiress from season two, the way that the Razor Crest falls into the atmosphere looks very much like the re-entry scene in Ron Howard's movie. The Invisible Man

The Invisible Man has a Saw reference. TBS SODA Leigh Whannell, writer of Saw and director of The Invisible Man, really likes adding Billy the Puppet in the movies he does. A graffiti painting of the Saw character can be seen during the car accident scene in the third act of The Invisible Man. CRACKED.COM

Back to the Future

Back to the Future had a tribute to the 1960 movie The Time Machine. Lovecraft Country opens with an homage to The Jackie Robinson Story. The series opens with a voice over while Atticus dreams: This is the story of a boy and his dream. But more than that, it is the story of an American boy and a dream that is truly American. The audio is directly taken from the 1950 film. CRACKED.COM

Captain Marvel

Pancho's Bar in Captain Marvel is a tribute to a famous aviator featured in The Right Stuff. Budeebser Florence Pancho Barnes was an early aviator and pilot who founded the Women's Air Reserve and, in later years, ran a ranch called the Happy Bottom Riding Club. CRACKED.COM

Halloween (2018)

Halloween (2018) recorded and snuck a song into the film that featured in the original. 99.7 MHZ SOURCE In the original 1978 movie, Laurie Strode sings I wish I had you all alone. Just the two of us. It's a made-up song because John Carpenter couldn't afford the rights to add a song to the movie. Director/writer David Gordon Greene got a band to write and record a song based on those lyrics. The song plays on the car radio in the scene where the boy and his dad run into the escaped inmates. CRACKED.COM

Baby Driver

In Baby Driver, Baby's jail number is also the release date of The Driver. DDC 28 Edgar Wright said The Driver greatly influenced him, and the movie's release date (July 28, 1978) makes up Baby's jail number (2871978). The same number can also be seen on a wall during the Harlem Shuffle scene, and the director of The Driver has a voice cameo in the court scene. CRACKED.COM

Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood

A line used in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is a reference to Easy Rider. The 1969 film dealt with counterculture and changing times, so it easily fits with the themes of Quentin Tarantino's film. A character calls one of Charles Manson's hippie members Dennis Hopper, clearly referring to Hopper's role in Easy Rider. CRACKED.COM

IT: Chapter 2

Bill Hader snuck a line from The Thing into IT: Chapter 2. There's a scene where Stanley climbs out of a fridge with spider-like tentacles before face-hugging Richie (played by Hader). When Hader realized that the sequence felt similar to The Thing, he asked director Andrés Muschietti if he could add the line, You gotta be fucking kidding. CRACKED.COM

Stranger Things

The Stranger Things season one reference to Witness that everybody missed. The Duffer brothers were surprised that the internet didn't pick up on their Witness reference in the scene where Eleven sees a photograph of Will in Mike's bedroom and points to it, as if she's identifying the missing kid. In the 1985 movie, a young boy spots a photograph of a man he recognizes as a killer and identifies him. CRACKED.COM

Ready Player One

Spielberg didn't know his production team snuck a gremlin into Ready Player One. The director didn't want any of his previous movies to be featured as easter eggs in Ready Player One, but his crew felt it needed to be done. While a couple of these attempts were spotted and subsequently cut by Spielberg, a gremlin involved in the final battle managed to slip past him. CRACKED.COM

Knives Out

Daniel Craig's detective in Knives Out gives a nod to the 1972 film Sleuth. Craig, who plays the private eye Benoit Blanc, is first introduced in the film after having solved a case involving a tennis player. In the opening of Sleuth, the crime fiction writer dictates his novel, and he describes the killer pacing the lines of a tennis court before getting rid of a body. CRACKED.COM

South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut

In Tarantino's movie, Cliff is looking for his old colleague George, who is supposedly blind and looks like a skeleton, while the same kind of riff like that in Psycho plays over the scene.
