Lorne Michaels hasn’t shown any signs of wanting to leave Saturday Night Live, but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t thought about a successor.
According to Seth Meyers, his former boss’ plans for the future aren’t a total mystery. On a recent episode of Easy Talk with Sam Fragoso, the SNL alum hinted that the 80-year-old producer likely has some idea of who should eventually take over his post. Though he refused to name names, Meyers speculated about one of Michaels’ non-negotiables in selecting a replacement. “The one thing Lorne definitely wants is whoever replaces him to do an impression of him the whole time,” he joked.
Like Michaels, Simpsons creator Matt Groening and showrunner Matt Selman are also thinking about the future of their long-running series. During a recent sitdown with Variety, the pair revealed that seasons 37 through 40 will only feature 17 episodes, which is five less than their typical 22-episode run. “If you know that you have four seasons to think about, it changes how you approach storytelling,” Groening explained of their new approach, one apparently inspired by The Simpsons’ recent four-season renewal.
