‘Five horn blasts from a ship means imminent danger’
20 Sounds That Mean You Should Run, Now!

Evolution has blessed us with several senses that can be used to detect danger in addition to their better uses, like eating pizza and listening to Dua Lipa. Smelling rotten eggs, tasting blood, feeling the ground rumble, seeing a big-ass mountain lion — these are all signals that things are about to get bad.

One of the most ignored signs of danger, however, is sound. You might think you’ll see a car crash or smell a fire in time to react safely, but you can spare yourself a lot of grief by listening for them first. For example, user UnderH20giraffe points to “the cracking of ice” as a hazard you’ll probably hear before you see.

They then asked r/AskReddit, “What is a sound that people should know means immediate danger?” and their fellow Redditors sounded out all kinds of alarms.

coffeenweed 1y ago Tree branch snapping above you
hartoast 1y ago Stars and Stripes Forever played at a circus means there's some sort of emergency
AkkadBakkadBambeBo80 1y ago If you live in earthquake prone area and hear very low rumbling, run out to open ground.
boardjock 1y ago Edited 1y ago Sound of water getting louder coming your way if you're near a stream or river. Flash floods are no joke.
Madlutian 1y ago A quick, high wine, followed by a CRACK... Get down, you're being shot at from a distance.
4rd_Prefect 1y ago A zipper sound when filling a tyre/tire means that it's about to blow up in your face
DeltaOmegaTheta 1y ago If you hear bubble! in a tire shop, there's a high probability a tire is about to explode.
DieHardAmerican95 1y ago If you're on a construction site and someone yells HEADACHE!, you better be covering your head because they dropped something from up high.
DickMorningwood9 1y ago If you are outdoors and hear a buzzing sound, stop immediately and look around. You might find that the source of the sound is a rattlesnake. Back away.
gwinerreniwg 1y ago If you're in the London Underground and hear an announcement for Inspector Sands to report somewhere - there is a fire in that part of the tube station.
IHeartPenguins0 1y ago Fire alarm. So many people ignore them and it can cost lives. Don't assume that it's nothing. Check things out before you settle down for a nap.
Whereisthelobby 1y ago A siren on any Australian beach is almost always a shark alarm and you should get out of the water as fast as possible.
cgtdream 1y ago If you hear a freight train sound in the middle of a thunder/rain storm, seek cover or shelter immediately. Tornado is most likely nearby.
tulleandtiaras42 1y ago Five horn blasts from a ship means imminent danger. This usually means someone needs to get out of the way or they are gonna have a bad time.
Different_Nature8269 1y ago In Canada, a train horn blasting repeatedly in short succession means they're going to crash into something on the track/emergency. If you're near the tracks and it's a freighter, beware of the tanker cars full of Hazmat chemicals. If you're on a passenger train and you hear the horns or a walkie talkie say 'BRAKE BRAKE BRAKE', brace for impact. Dad worked for the railway.
Doodiecup 1y ago I heard the Tongo eruption from Alaska. It was so low pitched I felt it as much as I heard it I guess. At the time I disregarded it even though it was completely novel. Anyways, I now know the sound of the apocalypse as I imagine an asteroid impact would be similar.
cranberrystew99 1y ago Any loud noises on the highway. Rubbery thumps can be tires bouncing. They're surprisingly quiet until they crush your face in. Loud, sudden ripping/boom could be a semi tire failing. That can cut your head off, or at least wreck your car. Screeching tires when you're already going 70 means someone lost control. Expect debris. Sudden roaring of an engine means someone is passing you WAY too fast. Just don't move from your lane and hope they pass you without incident, but be wary of them crashing ahead of you.
Firree 1y ago As someone who used to work at construction sites, you never want to hear a screeching metal sound coming from a crane. Is essuntially sounds like loud high pitched brakes on a freight train. It means improper loading, the metal pins holding the crane in place are getting sheared or forced out, and that crane is about to come down.
Allfunandgaymes 1y ago Any sort of deep groaning or crushing / grinding noise on or near a bridge. When bridges fail, they rarely do so in a way that isn't spectacularly catastrophic.
MauroXXD 1y ago If you hear wildlife go quiet, disaster is imminent. If you hear your kids go quiet, disaster is in progress.
