27 of the Worst Pieces of Tech People Have Owned

Nobody needed three seasons of Black Mirror to figure out that not all technology is beneficial, especially now, when our plastic-filled brains are boiling daily in what could be delicately described as a techno hellscape. It turns out Asimov’s novels were off because nobody told the robots they couldn’t hurt people in the first place.

But even if your self-driving car isn’t accelerating into concrete bollards to try to shave two minutes off your commute, there’s a huge amount of tech that just kinda sucks. Which, given “smart” products’ price tags, hurts plenty all by itself.

Knowing this, though, doesn’t prevent some people from investing in the latest tech anyway, even if it sounds idiotic. You may not need a TV on your refrigerator, but the very idea sounds like something we should be into, right? As one Redditor found out: wrong! And given the rest of these stories, we can only hope they’ve learned from their mistakes.

AcornTopHat 1y ago The original Furby. I wanted it SOOO bad like every other kid the Christmas they came out. I tried to teach it phrases and everything. Anyways, it would wake me up in the middle of the night just talking in its own. | tried putting a blanket out it, putting in my closet, etc., but it wouldn't stop. I finally opened it up and took the batteries out and my parents were so mad that it was all such a waste :( 1.5K Award Share ...
Rammid 1y ago in 2015/16 I bought a heads up display for my car. You place your phone on it with their app and it should give you metrics. Absolute waste of money. It was hard to see, had ads, slid around, couldnt see if you werent sitting at the right angle. What a waste of money.
wreckdown 1y ago In the 90's or 00's I bought an HP Scanner. Once you connected it via USB, the scanner light was on, ALWAYS. They finally released a software patch, which was a memory-resident program that ran on your PC to keep the scanner light off. It was the most asinine thing I'd ever seen, and soured me on HP forever. 936 Award Share ...

jpiro 1y ago Edited 1y ago Rechargeable batteries. When we had young kids and were going through batteries like mad, we figured it would be great to have ones we could just swap out, recharge and roll on. Tried multiple brands, multiple chargers, etc. and never found any that were reliable. Half the time they didn't charge, when the did they only charged partially and it seemed like they just died way faster than regular alkaline batteries-which is what we ended up just going back to.

Pithecanthropus88 1y ago A distortion pedal for my guitar called the Fender Blender (it was the very first pedal I ever owned). When engaged it picked up a local AM radio station better than the radio in my mom's car. Plus it sounded shitty. 93 Award Share ...
alexzoin 1y ago The entertainment system in my 2022 Civic. The worst most buggy, glitchy, garbage android auto experience | have ever had. Constant disconnections, stuttering audio, occasional refusal to pair, told me my phone was incompatible despite it having just been paired, maps glitching out constantly. All on a brand new Pixel too. 89 Award Share ...

TacohTuesday 1y ago My 3D printer. Not because the product is bad, but because the whole concept of 3D printing is way more fiddly and time-consuming than I ever thought it would be. A good hobby for someone who has the time and energy to tinker a lot. Not so good for folks with a busy schedule. Now it's gathering dust (Ender 3 V2). - 52 Award Share ...

TheBlueJam 1y ago Haven't seen anyone say Xbox 360 - what a piece of trash the hardware was. Some of my most fun years were spent on it, don't get me wrong, but between red rings, console bans out of nowhere and smashing the top of it with my fist to get discs to read, that things was complete and utter garbage. 27 Award Share ...

Laurapalmer90 1y ago The worst? In the 90s | had a Spy Pen. You'd fold in half and stick it in your ear to amplify sounds like voices from across a room. Waited weeks for it to come in the mail and I couldn't hear a thing. Such a let down for such a huge Harriet The Spy fan. 22 Award Share ...

jebz 1y ago A Nespresso Machine. The app is barely functional, half the machines I've been sent cannot connect to the app via Bluetooth and 100% of the time I've tried to descale the machine, just entering the descaling option bugs up the app and machine and cannot be reversed, your required to get a new unit sent to you after you call tech support and show them via video that the machine doesn't work. 0/10 do not recommend. 8 Award Share ...
1y ago I'm a Type 1 diabetic. Medtronic's continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) sensors were a nightmare. Nowhere close to accurate (it said | was at 115 and a finger stick said I was at 220) and never lasted the full 7 days without flaking out. 8 Award Share ... + 4 more replies
AmericanScream 1y ago Edited 1y ago A friend of mine has a Samsung fridge - It's one of those super smart fridges that has all kinds of features like cameras, touch display, sensors everywhere. The compressor has apparently started to fail. The fridge reports room temperature in both the freezer and fridge sections and says, No errors found. Unit running normally. It's nice to know that your Samsung fridge can tell you if someone's at your front door, play your favorite albums, allow you to surf the web, and even see what's inside without opening the door, but it won't tell you
kevinatfms 1y ago MIRROR. The workout mirror that has live classes. Now owned by Lululemon. The thing uses audio/video/UI over differing IP's(IPv6 and IPv4) causing buffering/stuttering/latency issues which make the live classes useless. Cant use it at all as advertised(live classes) and unless we download the classes well in advance we are shit out of luck. Customer service was flat out useless and they still dont know what to do other than tell me to turn off IPV6 on my modem(which Xfinity wont allow). Its a piece of shit made by a piece of shit company and bought out by
