21 Parts of Modern Life That Would Make a Time Traveler Go, ‘Ah, This Is a Dystopia’

When it comes to modern life, there’s a lot to be thankful for. Antibiotics, for one thing. Indoor plumbing, that’s pretty cool. Certainly not an eradication of bigotry and discrimination, but quite a lot of progress from the days when it was legal to own people. Basically, if any wild-haired scientists invite you into their time machines, set the dial to forward, because everything back there will kill you.

That doesn’t mean the modern world is perfect, of course. Far from it. In fact, if you look at the dystopian fiction of just a few decades ago, it’s hard not to be convinced that some people were definitely reading it as instructions, not warnings. That’s why user OriolesrRavens1974 asked r/AskReddit, “What’s the most dystopian thing happening right now that we never thought could happen just 25 years ago?”

rizzo1717 1y ago People have the worlds knowledge in their hand and they still choose ignorance.
Sea_Fix5048 1y ago Libraries and books being presented as enemies of freedom.
Petulantraven 1y ago Companies (coughNestlecough) stealing water and selling it back to the people they stole it from.
Elm-and-Yew 1y ago Lawmakers just straight up ignoring things the people voted for (Ohio).
1y ago The increasing income inequality. It's feeling like we're getting a bit closer to a hunger games type world.
BenjTheMaestro 1y ago The volume of personal data we willingly give away, nearly every fucking day.
AnotherScoutTrooper 1y ago A private conversation on any social media platform will be reflected on all the others you use. The speed at which something from Discord triggers a wave of YouTube recommendations I am absolutely not interested in is always impressive.
seapunkprincess 1y ago When I scroll on Instagram it will be like a dead baby from a genocide, then an ad, then a friends birthday, then another dead person, and then a thirst trap. It's fucked.
Complaint-Expensive 1y ago RETO There are children who's entire lives, from birth to death, are basically public domain - because everything from their first picture to every other major milestone of their lives is online for all of God and country to see.
SqueezleStew 1y ago I'm gobsmacked that so many people globally are exhibiting psychotic behavior and tendencies, believing absolutely mad conspiracy theories. To these people it's absolutely real. Also the casual insouciant violence to innocent citizens.
Primal_Pedro e 1y ago I just read a news about the fact that the First time ever there is a desert climate in Brazil (in north of Bahia to be more specific). I'm still processing this. Also, fire in Manaus and Amazonas, which are in a RAIN forest. This is one of those things that shouldn't happen but some how is happening now. I'm scared and sweating!
Mercury82jg 1y ago Edited 1y ago I can't keep track of all the invasive things killing trees in Ohio. Asian longhorned beetle, woolly hemlock adelgid, beech leaf disease, emerald ash borer, sudden oak death, oak wilt, butternut canker, spotted lanternfly, chestnut blight, and Dutch elm disease off the top of my head. Not to mention the insect apocalypse. Seems people are ignoring basic ecology and how the food chain is collapsing.
BarbaraVian 1y ago I am a 30yo Canadian and I remember a time when mass shootings in the US was so unfrequent that every time it happened, it would be on the news for weeks, sometimes month. And we would all feel that dreadful feeling that the world had changed for the worst. And we would all deeply mourn. And documentaries about it would pop out. Or movies. And not the typical souless true crime documentaries that are popping up nowadays on netflix every week, but ones with social commentary and stuff. Now, when a mass shooting happens in the
1y ago Technology addiction. Ask any teacher about how kids use their phones and what the biggest source of bullying and mental health problems is. I guarantee they're going to say for both that phones are causing an epidemic that needs to change but won't. The way I see people interact with others when they don't have frequent internet access compared to peers who do is mind boggling how different it is.
Nopetynope12 1y ago everything is a fucking ad. Spotify was made to not have many ads, now it's like a fucking radio station. I can barely watch youtube between the ads for god knows what. Every website I read has about 1 line of writing between ads. They're trying to use drones and blimps to put ads IN THE FUCKING SKY
MagickalFuckFrog 1y ago Everything as a service. No software developer sells their packages anymore, you just owe $70 forever. Car companies are installing heated seats that you have to pay a monthly fee to us. No one owns music or movies, which just disappear from streaming services at a whim. Even that new gaming machine you purchased is useless without an internet connection and subscription. And all that which you do not own can be taken from you or have the prices jacked up after you're dependent on it. It's the drug dealer philosophy of capitalism.
LemmeLaroo 1y ago You know in sci-fi movies when somebody buys a beer and the store clerk is like That will be 3500 credits and you think Damn either beer got way more expensive in the future or money became worth way less That's how I feel every time I buy anything now.
avspuk 1y ago The death of the concept of truth. Even tho Orwell plainly explained the whys & hows I am still regularly caught off-guard by just how successful the campaign to destroythe notion of truthhas been. And so, now that 'nothing is true', then 'everything is permissible' and we are all very severely fucked
Dowew 1y ago Today someone used Deep Fake audio of the mayor of london pretending that he wanted to postpone remembrance day in solidarity with palestinians. British police say this is not technically a crime.
johnnylongpants1 1y ago Um, Nazis used to be the bad guys. Well, they still are, but that used to be a unanimously held public opinion.
