Nobody Wanted To See Andrew Schulz At The Game Awards Last Night
Imagine having Roman Reigns, Cody Rhodes and Jason Momoa together onstage at a massive industry event and allowing Andrew Schulz anywhere near a microphone.
Last night, podcaster and self-proclaimed “foremost political journalist of my time” Schulz crashed the Game Awards, took needless pot shots at the Mortal Kombat franchise and let loose a blood-curdling, voice-cracking scream. The entire cast for the new film adaptation of the video game series Street Fighter, which will premiere in 2026, was at the ceremony to present the award for Best Ongoing Game, but some off-the-cuff remarks from Schulz overshadowed both the Street Fighter trailer and the recipient of the honor, No Man's Sky, to the chagrin of gamers everywhere.
In a definitely unscripted moment that the Game Awards edited out of the YouTube video of the Street Fighter cast's appearance, Schulz took a microphone out of the hands of castmate David Dastmalchian and pretended to bring out the cast of the other upcoming sequel to video game adaptation, Mortal Kombat II, before telling the audience, “I'm just kidding, I'm just kidding! They didn't come, they only care about money! We care about money and you!”
Don't Miss
Schulz then screamed, “Street Fighter forever!” And the crowd went mild.
As many Street Fighter fans pointed out in the wake of Schulz' attempt to start a beef with the Mortal Kombat cinematic universe, his call-out certainly wasn't sanctioned, and, despite his career as a podcaster and comedian, the Street Fighter producers and Game Awards organizers seemingly wanted to avoid hearing him speak at all, given how Schulz wasn't assigned a microphone for the appearance and had to seize one out of the hands of a visibly uncomfortable Dastmalchian.
In response, a producer from the Mortal Kombat movie franchise tweeted out, "I don’t climb over others to get ahead.” However, numerous actors from the series played along with Schulz' promotional smack-talk, posting their own appropriately WWE-esque challenges for Schulz to step into the ring for real.
Meanwhile, even die-hard Street Fighter fans aren't amused by Schulz' decision to hijack the cast appearance at the Game Awards and put himself in the spotlight. In the Street Fighter subreddit, fans criticized both Schulz' comments and his very casting in the film. “Loved the trailer but this was worst part of the movie announcement,” one fan wrote in a thread on the forum's front page, “Really hope the team making the movie doesn’t force a weird rivalry with mortal Kombat 2.”
"Giving Shultz (sic) a live mic will always be a mistake," one commenter agreed.
Another fan corrected, “They didn't even give him a mic, David had a mic and was about to say something only for Shultz to cut him off and quite literally rip the mic off his hands.”
“Invite an assclown into your cast, get assclown behavior. What an idiot,” a Street Fighter fan lamented.
Many Street Fighter fans who weren't already familiar with Schulz' whole unfunny instigator persona declared that, if this is the kind of talent that the movie's producers decided to add to the franchise, then they'll just pass on this upcoming iteration of the Street Fighter film adaptation. Obviously, fans on the internet are constantly making those kind of threats and not following through on them, but, if Schulz' presence in the film does cause a box office disappointment, we'll actually see who only cares about money.
