Nick Offerman Explains the Best — and Worst — Part of Being Married to Megan Mullally

Staying married for 22 years in Hollywood is no small feat for a couple of stars like Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally. Thankfully, they’re more than capable of handling the ups and downs of married actor life, and Offerman hopefully will never have to worry about finding a Megan 2.

To many sitcom fans, Offerman and Mullally are the pre-eminent power couple in comedy, and it’s easy to see why: from Gilmore Girls to Will & Grace to Parks and Recreation, the Offerman-Mullally marriage has its fingerprints all over the TV industry, and their treasured joint appearances never fail to delight and terrify viewers with their dynamic, explosive chemistry. But, of course, even the happiest of marriages require hard work from both sides, and the perfect partner isn’t going to be perfect all the time — especially when she won two Emmys before he managed to snag his first one.

During a recent interview with The Guardian, Offerman was asked to reveal the “best and worst things about being married to Megan Mullally,” and his answers were as diplomatic and dexterous as only a man who has been married for multiple decades and wishes to remain so for multiple more could muster.

“She’s an exquisite goddess,” Offerman began to answer the odd question, which could have very well proven to be a minefield for a less adept husband. “She’s the funniest person I’ve ever met — and I’ve met Mel Brooks and John Cleese. She dances, she sings. She’s a dramatic and comedic genius. She has astonishing taste — with a few obvious lapses.”

But, of course, every relationship has its hardships, and the Offerman-Mullally marriage is no exception. “We’ll come to blows over who left the cap off the toothpaste," Offerman admitted, but a bathroom debate is small potatoes in the grand scheme of the romance. Said Offerman, “I’m very grateful that after 25 years, she is still choosing me.”

While every couple has those small spats about toothpaste caps and other trivial matters, the fact that Offerman and Mullally are in the same field — one in which Mullally is arguably a more advanced professional — poses its own challenges to the pair’s marital bliss. Said Offerman of that unique trial, “The worst part is, in the same way that when I back up a truck and my dad is sitting on my shoulder, when I’m performing, especially singing, Megan is very much on my shoulder.”

“When you’re married to the Lionel Messi of performing, it can be tough to keep your shots on goal,” Offerman added succinctly.

Still, as Offerman added, when he has the pleasure of working with his wife on a TV show like Parks and Recreation, their insane on-screen chemistry doesn’t start and stop with the rolling of the cameras. As Offerman explained, “The craziest thing about her dangerous sexuality was that, in Parks and Recreation, I was known for keeping a straight face. Chris Pratt would come out of left field and make me giggle, but I enjoy deadpan humor, so generally, nobody could make me laugh.”

“Megan would walk into the room and I would be done because, by definition, she knows what buttons to push,” Offerman revealed. “All our scenes are her using her sexuality as a weapon against me, and I lost that battle long, long ago.”
