Ariel Winter Reveals the One Thing She Wishes She Could Change About Alex Dunphy’s ‘Modern Family’ Storyline
Even after 11 seasons of Modern Family, Ariel Winter still wanted more for Alex Dunphy.
Winter, now five years removed from Modern Family’s series finale, recently reflected on her character’s plotlines, admitting that while “Alex had a great arc” on the sitcom, she wished that fans were able to see a less studious side of the middle Dunphy sibling.
“I would’ve liked to explore more of her social life,” Winter explained in a new interview with TV Insider, recalling how “crazy” it is that five years have passed since the show’s final episode.

“We saw Alex achieve so much academically and professionally,” she continued. “I would’ve liked to see more of her journey successfully making friends and having healthy, loving relationships that were just for her.”
Winter, however, can still recognize Alex’s impact. Back in 2020, the actress praised her character’s relatability, recalling how she was often approached by younger fans who felt that Alex “made it cool” to embrace their studies. “I’ve always enjoyed school, and I’ve always thought it was cool,” Winter explained during an appearance on Good Morning America. “It’s a beautiful thing to see so many different things that are being accepted because of our show.”
It might not be too late to explore Alex’s personal life, however. Earlier this month, Winter said she’d “definitely be open” to a Modern Family revival, encouraging the show’s producers to give her a call if they ever consider the idea.
“If they want to hit me up, they can hit me up,” she joked with E! News.
