Greg Daniels Speculates About How Hank Hill Would Feel About Donald Trump

You probably won’t find Hank Hill boarding the Trump Train any time soon.

King of the Hill co-creator Greg Daniels recently offered a bit more insight into the retired propane salesman’s political leanings, hinting that Hank Hill, who famously fangirled over George W. Bush memorabilia during the show’s most recent season, likely isn’t as enthusiastic about our current Commander-in-Chief.

When asked about a 2024 YouGov poll naming Hank as one of the most likely fictional characters to support Trump, Daniels told The Hollywood Reporter that Hank “would probably have some problems with a real estate billionaire from New York who has a gold toilet.”

Still, he isn’t totally certain. “I don’t know how he would vote now,” he admitted.

But to Daniels and his King of the Hill colleagues, this ambiguity is seemingly the point. As far back as 2006, co-creator Mike Judge shared that he tried to avoid letting the show “get too political,” a sentiment showrunner Saladin K. Patterson recently echoed after the show’s Season 14 premiere.

“It was always more about the social commentary,” Patterson said earlier this summer.  “It was always more cultural because it was based on the characters and the relationships and what it’s like to raise a family or to be neighbors.”

Daniels agreed, saying there’s “no point” in bringing modern politics into Arlen. “Americans are a lot less partisan than it looks like they are,” he argued, noting that the show attempted to reach a “well-meaning middle.” “We pitched it in 2017. We wrote it in 2023, so to think that it’s meant to be reacting to news events… no.”

So, it’s anyone’s guess as to whether Hank supported 47’s various presidential campaigns, but we can only hope the Texan got to experience one of Trump’s famously bad handshakes before casting his vote.
