Why Does Hank Hill Keep Getting Bill’s Mail?

Why Does Hank Hill Keep Getting Bill’s Mail?

Since King of the Hill’s earliest episodes, Hank Hill has complained that his mail drop-off ain’t right.

“Bill’s, Bill’s, Bill’s,” Hank whined while flipping through a stack of letters mostly addressed to his neighbor, Bill Dauterive. “Why do we keep getting Bill’s mail?”

For some King of the Hill fans, Hank’s famous patter from Season One’s “Plastic White Female” is more than just a pun. It’s proof of a Dale Gribble-level conspiracy about Rainey Street’s loneliest resident.

“Maybe Bill was putting his mail into Hank’s mailbox so they had an excuse to talk more,” one Redditor theorized on r/KingOfTheHill

“Bill definitely does it on purpose,” asserted a second. “Peggy will bring it to him, and he has an excuse to talk to her.”

Not everyone agreed that Bill was tampering with Arlen’s postal system, however. Several argued that the mail carriers could be at least partially to blame, speculating that a neglected mailbox, an address mix-up, and most likely of all, a desire to avoid small talk with the notoriously chatty divorcé could be behind Hank’s daily frustration.

“(My) pet theory is that Bill gets really clingy and weird to anyone who ever visits his home including the mailman,” another fan wrote. “Sometimes when they’re too tired to deal with his bullshit, they just leave his mail with the Hills, ‘cause they know it will get delivered to him anyway.”

“Bill is extremely creepy and needy,” another commenter agreed. “The mail carrier knows Hank and Bill are friends, so they drop all of Bill’s letters with Hank so they don’t have to get near Bill’s house.”

At the risk of Dale denouncing me as “sheeple,” I don’t think a make-friends-quick scheme or charcoal-huffing postal workers are behind Hank receiving Bill’s bills. Sometimes, a pun is just that — a pun.
