Colbert Says ‘Netflix, Call Me’ on Hiatus Sign Off
Have you ever spent a few days of your vacation looking for new jobs? I certainly have. Sometimes, it was simply to keep in the habit of it, keeping the resume fresh, the mind sharp. Other times, because I was sure the company I was working for was about to go belly-up. In the world of media, job security is a fantasy — whether that’s for digital media or primetime television.
Just look at Stephen Colbert. The man is almost certainly going to spend the next three-week hiatus of The Late Show looking for new jobs.
He said as much when he signed off for the show’s scheduled summer break. After doing a bit impersonating JD Vance (mask and all), Colbert said, “Netflix, call me. I’m available in June.” The Little Prince JD Vance bit was a good final act of comedy against the Trump administration, especially as it made Colbert break during the bit. “Hear ye, hear ye, hear ye! I want my wiver waised for my birthday! Also, I don’t like how bwue the sky is — paint it wed! Now, give me juice box,” Colbert joked, before pointing and chanting “Kill him! Kill him!” because the staffer brought the wrong kind of juice.
Don't Miss
After Colbert took off the mask, he said he will also be taking offers from Amazon.
Sure, it was a bit, but not really — Colbert will be out of a job starting in June. CBS made the controversial decision to cancel The Late Show, which currently has a contract that runs through May 2026. And the road is wide open for Colbert. For everyone in the 11:35 p.m. time slot — Colbert, Kimmel and Fallon — Colbert has the highest ratings. Plus, after he became a target of Trump, and many people worried that the cancellation of The Late Show was politically motivated, Colbert has become a cause celebre for the Democrats.
And so, during these next three weeks he will almost certainly be taking a long vacation, but he’ll also be taking calls. Maybe from Netflix, or Apple TV+, or Amazon Prime. As the streaming giants continue to outpace traditional networks, he might even be able to bring over some of his 200-plus person staff as well.
What’s certain is that the man won’t be out of a job for long.
