These Sitcoms Had the Perfect Number of Seasons, According to Reddit

One of the worst things that can happen to a show is that it runs beyond the story it has to tell. Somehow, you’re tuning in for Season Nine of a show that should have wrapped up everything by Season Four. The jokes are running stale, people are reliving the same old plotlines again and again, and the special guest appearances are starting to feel really desperate.

Fortunately, there are shows that have known when to gracefully bow out. By freeing audiences from cynical cash grabs, these sitcoms have become cherished by fans. To that end, Redditors assembled a list of shows that had the perfect number of seasons in the r/Sitcoms subreddit.

“What sitcom had the perfect amount of seasons? Not exactly where it should have ended, but even with the flawed seasons it all fit together nicely,” the prompt asked. “I would say the obvious with The Golden Girls and a couple others I think are Everybody Loves Raymond and Parks and Recreation!”

Parks and Recreation was mentioned quite a few times by fans. It’s definitely good that the show didn’t add another season, because it was clear there wasn’t much story left to tell. I mean, you always know the writers are struggling with what to do when you get a big time jump between seasons. Plus, they were running out of politicians to cameo.

Other top voted answers? Schitt’s Creek, for one, which ended after six seasons, as well as “The Dick Van Dyke Show, five seasons, then they stopped production on their own. Finished while still at a creative peak,” another Redditor argued. The Mary Tyler Moore Show was also lauded for ending before there was a dip in quality.

A surprising top answer? The Good Place (four seasons). “The Good Place won a Peabody Award for a reason. Perfect ending, satisfying and complete closure,” one person commented.

Here are some other top answers from the thread:

  • Veep
  • Frasier
  • The Nanny
  • Seinfeld
  • Hot in Cleveland

Are there some shows that should just never end? We certainly have examples of shows in their 17th or 27th season that are still going strong, but they’re clearly the exceptions to the rule.
