20 Times ‘SNL’ Was Hosted by Two or More People

Only one comedian has been brave enough to cohost an entire episode with his mom
20 Times ‘SNL’ Was Hosted by Two or More People

Technically it’s 21, because the Smothers Brothers did it twice. Sue us.

Peter Cook and Dudley Moore

The 11th episode of Season One was the first double-hoster, featuring the duo behind Pete and Dud, a wildly popular British satirical odd couple.

Richard Benjamin and Paula Prentiss

Benjamin had hosted solo earlier in his career, but Prentiss’ career took off in its own right, the two had a CBS sitcom called He & She, and they became the first married couple to host SNL in 1980.

The Smothers Brothers

Tommy and Dick Smothers graced Studio 8H twice, in 1982 and 1983.

Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas

Moranis and Thomas rode their Canadian bro characters, SCTV’s McKenzie Brothers, to an SNL appearance in 1983, multiple commercials and their own movie.

Beau Bridges and Jeff Bridges

The bros joined up for, among other things, a moderate-to-severely homophobic sketch where a guy comes in for a massage and is surprised to find that his masseuse Sandra is actually a buff Scandinavian man. This must have been a real struggle for Beau, who refuses to take the lord’s name in vain, even in character.

Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman

DeVito has hosted six times, but the married couple co-hosted in 1983, when the beginning of Cheers (a huge boon for Perlman’s career) converged with the end of Taxi (a massive credit for both of them).

Michael and Mary Palin

The Monty Python standout hosted the show four times, but in 1984 he did it with his 80-year-old mother. She was tapped for his monologue, but did such a good job that they asked her to hang out for more appearances throughout the show.

Billy Crystal, Ed Koch, Edwin Newman, Father Guido Sarducci and Betty Thomas

Sandwiched between a solo hosting gig and joining the show’s cast outright, Billy Crystal shared the spotlight with a mayor, a news reporter and a couple other actors in 1984.

Mr. T and Hulk Hogan

The stars of 1982’s Rocky III reunited to co-host a 1985 episode.

George Wendt and Francis Ford Coppola

Before he helped doula the seminal “Bill Swerski’s Superfans” into the world in 1991, George Wendt hosted in 1986, with Nic Cage’s uncle in tow for a runner where he pretended to direct the show.

Catherine Oxenberg and Paul Simon

It’s unclear if Simon and Oxenberg, who was starring in the soap opera Dynasty, had ever worked together before this show in 1986, or if they just kind of used Simon as a crutch for the first-time host.

Anjelica Huston and Billy Martin

The Oscar-nominated actress and the Yankees manager hosted the 1986 season finale together for… reasons, which fueled already raging rumors that the show was about to be canceled.

Chevy Chase, Steve Martin and Martin Short

The three amigos tri-hosted the show to help promote 1986’s The Three Amigos

Joe Montana and Walter Payton

The night before the 1987 Super Bowl, two of the biggest names in professional football (who weren’t, you know, still in the postseason) teamed up to host together.

Roseanne and Tom Arnold

Two years before they got divorced (and Arnold’s solo career took off), Roseanne led the pair through the show before dying of an opioid overdose. Just kidding. But you can imagine, right?

Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger

This couple hosted about six years before their divorce, promoting their 1994 film The Getaway. It was also mere months before Basinger would be forced to sell (at a loss) the small Georgia town she’d bought in 1989 for $20 million. You never know what people are going through… be kind.

Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey

The two were promoting their hit MTV show Newleyweds in 2004, holding the record for most cringeworthy Simpson-family SNL appearance until Ashlee would jig her way through technical difficulties a decade later.

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen

The first twins to host the show, they came on to promote their 2004 movie New York Minute. Within two years, they’d give up on the whole “America’s co-sweethearts” thing and transition into being weird fashion girlies. Good for them.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler

In 2015, they’d already co-hosted the Golden Globes three times, and brought their extremely 2015 comedy and chemistry to the SNL stage like college freshmen dropping in to visit their favorite high school teachers.

Steve Martin and Martin Short

The Only Murderers in the Building costars co-hosted in 2022, this time without Chevy Chase. Why, did something happen?
