Animated movies get a bad rap. Nobody ever thinks to give, say, Oppenheimer or The Godfather the cartoon treatment, no matter how much more you can do with a horse’s head without the laws of physics to bind you. Animation almost always serves opposite ends of the age spectrum, from the youngest youth to the extremely adult. Like, extremely. No one is adult enough for Sausage Party.
But there’s nothing inherently childish or obscene about animation. If anything, the effort that goes into hand-painting thousands of cells or performing the kind of technological voodoo required to produce 3-D CGI models is a mark of craftsmanship worthy of an Oscar-quality script. That’s why, when user idkigiveup asked r/AskReddit, “What is the best animated movie and why?,” Redditors had no problem listing silly little cartoons that deserve to transcend Best Animated Feature.
