Making children’s movies is a delicate balancing act between giving kids the age-appropriate stimulation they want and not making the adults charged with policing their media consumption want to throw themselves out the window in boredom. Make it all gentle, formless lights and sounds, and you’ve got feature-length Teletubbies, and nobody wants that. Go too far in the other direction, however, and you’ve got, well, most of the children’s media of the ‘80s and ‘90s.
