Chevy Chase’s TikTok: Boomer Anti-Comedy or Just Plain Terrible?

Chevy Chase’s TikTok: Boomer Anti-Comedy or Just Plain Terrible?

Imagine if your dad had a TikTok. (Your dad has a TikTok? Sorry, dude.) We’re guessing it would be a flurry of shaky phone work, accidental uploads and terrible dad jokes. Now picture if your dad somehow attracted 1.1 million followers. That hot mess would look an awful lot like Chevy Chase’s bizarre TikTok, the social media equivalent of a president falling down a flight of stairs — sure, it gets laughs but for all the wrong reasons.

Chase isn’t exactly a prolific poster — only seven TikToks this year, about one a month, so it doesn’t appear he’s doing this for the clout. Instead, it’s only when he gets a funny idea (say, making “moo” noises) that he’s inspired to share his comedy with the world.

Predictably, the responses aren’t always kind.

If I had to choose a favorite, it’s probably the TikTok where Chase awkwardly recreates the “Homer recedes into the bushes” meme, if only because it seems he might actually fall like Gerald Ford when he squeezes through the shrubbery. Did someone place that pedestal behind him so he’d have something to trip over?

Then there are the extended clips of TiredNostalgiaCons that a family member presumably put together, a montage of Chase with former co-stars like Christie Brinkley (misspelling her name, naturally) and random celebs like Giancarlo Esposito and Rosario Dawson. Extended scenes of talking to children that are completely inaudible? Chef’s kiss.

Obligatory TikTok memes? Check, but not without Chase’s greasy comedy thumbprint. A dance to “Gonna Have A Good Day” gives way to Chase pointing out his visibly stained T-shirt so we can read the witty bon mot: “I’m not a gynecologist but I’ll take a look.” Available now from the Classy Shirts to Wear When You’re Out With Your Wife and Daughter collection.

On its surface, the most human video is one that depicts “just another Wednesday” in the life of Chevy Chase. Playing chess on a beautiful wooded deck, signing autographs, goofing around in old Saturday Night Live costumes. But the reality is, he’s bored out of his mind — why else would he spend this idyllic day mugging it up it for social media?

Oh, he remembers. And this is as close as he can get right now.
