The spurned hug that made headlines in 2017 still keeps Kesha up at night
Kesha Calls Viral Seinfeld Snub the ‘Saddest Moment’ of Her Life

Failing to hug Jerry Seinfeld is officially rock bottom.

Pop star Kesha unintentionally went viral for a cringe-inducing red carpet moment with the sitcom superstar in 2017, an incident she called the “saddest moment of my life” on yesterday’s episode of The Best Show with Tom Scharpling. The “Tik Tok” singer attempted to ambush Seinfeld in the middle of an on-camera interview during a charity event for The David Lynch Foundation, which Seinfeld shut down with a decisive “no hug for you” before laughing off the awkward incident to the reporter, saying, “I don’t know who that was.”

Kesha, whose time in the spotlight has famously had soberingly dark moments, said of the snub, “It was the most depressing and hilarious, but also so sad — it was, like, the saddest moment of my life."

Kesha credits the transcendental meditation methods she learned from The David Lynch foundation for having a profoundly positive impact on her life, and when the legendary arthouse director asked her to appear at a charity event, she jumped at the chance. "He was like, ‘Could you do an event that’s a charity event?’ I was in the middle of tour. I was exhausted, but I really love David Lynch, and I heard that Jerry Seinfeld's gonna to be there," she recalled.

During those exhausting international tours, Seinfeld was one of Kesha’s comforts that kept her sane — the singer explained that she brought Seinfeld DVDs with her on every plane ride, and the show helped her through many anxious moments in her career. Kesha said, “I’d pop in Seinfeld and I’d be like, 'Everything’s okay in the world,’ and watch my buddy."

“So then, I get to the fucking charity event, and I got really excited, because (Seinfeld) brings me peace and love and all things good in the universe, and then he didn’t hug me in front of cameras.”

For his part, Seinfeld later said of the awkward interaction during an Extra interview, “I don’t hug a total stranger. I have to meet someone, say hello. I gotta start somewhere,” though he claimed that he met up with Kesha later in the evening and the two shared a laugh about the incident. He did not, however, mention if he ever gave her an off-camera hug — it certainly sounds like she still needs one.
