Country and rock music icon Johnny Cash’s seven separate jail stints are already the stuff of legend, but, if he were alive today, the state of Tennessee would probably add an eighth for singing “A Boy Named Sue.”

On April 17, 1982, Saturday Night Live’s in-studio audience was treated to appearances from a pair of mythical music figures from opposite ends of a couple different spectrums. Cash played that evening’s host with English pop superstar Elton John on as the musical guest, leading to one of the greatest costume changes in music history when the Man in Black switched get-ups with pop music’s premier peacock.

In case we needed more evidence that Cash is the coolest person who ever lived, here’s the outlaw country icon dressed in borderline drag as he thumbed his nose at laws that wouldn’t exist for another 40 years.
