Assassin's Creed Games Just Keep Getting Better

A lot of old players, er, players of the original series, don’t particularly like the newer, truly open world entries. They’d rather slink in the shadows and study the subtle art of silent killing. You can still do that in the series’ more recent titles, but you also have the option to absolutely blast your foot into an opponent's chest in open battle, sending them hurtling off a 1,000 foot cliff. Assassin’s Creed has not been a stealth game for a long time. And that’s ok. Things change. Sometimes, they even get better.

As AC games have been steadily released since 2007, the games have steadily improved. Of course, there have been entries that didn’t hit the mark, like the maligned Assassin’s Creed Rogue, but the more recent games Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla, all totally whip ass. Controls get more fluid, combos feel more rewarding, and the storylines are as good as ever. The series has settled into a formula of open world exploration, eagle sight enemy tagging, and decimating enemy soldiers. But the next title in the series could break this pattern in a significant way.

Ubisoft

Please be set anywhere other than Europe or the U.S. we get it already.

The next evolution of the series, Assassin’s Creed Infinity, will mark a departure: it’s going to be a live service game hub. Details are sparse but we know that it will be the place where the modern AC story takes place and a launching pad for future AC games. The DLC and continuing quest systems in modern AC games already have plenty of microtransactions and new content added in regularly, so Ubisoft already has practice swimming in those waters. Ubisoft won’t need to put out totally new titles if they can just update Infinity and charge players for access to the new content. And excitingly, the games on Infinity will not just be RPG's, they'll also vary in length and price. The change of genre could be great, or a major misstep. Either way, Infinity will make or break the series.
