20 Movies That Flopped So Hard They Changed the Whole Industry

'No question, the failure of 'John Carter''

Some movies don't just flop. They cannonball so hard that they blow any further attempts at a career, an audience, or even an entire genre straight out of the water. For example, “I've theorized that the failure of the Assassin's Creed movie killed the chances of big-budget, big-screen adaptations of video game movies aimed towards adults becoming mainstream,” u/MasterLawlzReborn told r/boxoffice

“The games were already basically blockbuster movies, and the format would have allowed for countless installments (given that almost every game had a different location and protagonist). The franchise could have easily been The Matrix meets Pirates of the Caribbean and made shitloads of money. They even managed to get Michael Fassbender, one of the best actors alive, as the lead.”

However, “ still managed to drop the ball,” they continued. “Had it been a huge success like it should have been, I think studios would have been a lot more open to dumping a lot of money into video game movies not aimed at children. We could have gotten cool, weird shit like Wolfenstein or Dishonored. It could have been the next big genre.”

They asked, “Which movie's box office failure had the largest impact on the industry as a whole?”
