20 Movie Marketing Campaigns That Flopped Or Went Haywire

‘Drive’ looked like a ‘Fast & Furious’ type of film

The success of a movie hinges on several factors: the size of its budget, name recognition of its stars, capitulation to foreign powers, etc. But the marketing campaign cannot be overlooked. A great movie can be buried if the studio neglects the publicity, and a misleading campaign can sour audiences on a movie they might have otherwise liked, even without all those missing explosions.

“The first that comes to mind for me is John Carter,” u/supesforlike told r/movies. “While not particularly worthy of critical acclaim IMO, it was an incredibly fun movie with fantastic effects that I feel could have set up a successful series. This movie failed to find success not only due to its rather dull title but also because the marketing for it was nonexistent. My dad took me to see it because he had read the comics as a kid and was excited for it, but otherwise, I doubt I ever would have heard of it.”

They asked, “What are some movies that didn’t become popular due to marketing failures?”
