Guess Where Norm Macdonald Bit Chevy Chase

Weekend Update legends Norm Macdonald and Chevy Chase shared the silver screen in 1998’s Dirty Work, with Norm heading up a revenge-for-hire business and Chevy appearing as the degenerate gambler Dr. Farthing, one of Macdonald’s desperate clients. 

Chase loved the movie’s raunchy script, he told Dirty Work co-star Artie Lange on a Howard Stern Show appearance, and hoped Macdonald wouldn’t edit out the comedy’s filthiest jokes.  (Chase didn’t entirely get his wish — producers cut a scene in which Macdonald and Lange delivered donuts that were dangling from their genitals.)

But Macdonald made up for it. Back in those days, movie studios would send out publicity materials called EPKs, or Electronic Press Kits. On an episode of Norm Macdonald Has A Show, the younger comedian reminded Chase that they had collaborated on some old-timey hijinks to promote Dirty Work. “I don’t know if I’ll remember this,” Chase confessed as Macdonald rolled the clip.

The scratchy, black-and-white video features a silent-comedy piano soundtrack as Macdonald encounters two director’s chairs. The one bearing Chase’s name is set at normal height, while Macdonald’s is low enough for a child. The herky-jerky Macdonald switches the names, giving himself the taller version.

Norm sits and celebrates. Chase enters, cleaning his glasses and obliviously sitting on Macdonald’s lap. After Norm throws Chevy off, the befuddled Chase takes the baby seat, a scene right out of an old Laurel and Hardy short. 

Cut to the next scene, in which Chase finds the chairs and switches back the nameplates. He takes the taller chair and settles in for a nap. Soon, Macdonald enters and kneels between Chase’s legs, simulating oral sex. 

Or is he? Chase’s face grimaces in pain as the silent-comedy music stops. “He actually did bite me!” he yells as a cackling Macdonald escapes out of frame. “He bit my cock!”

Don’t believe him? Chase provided forensic evidence, inviting the camera to get a close-up of his khakis. Sure enough, Macdonald’s bite marks are still visible on the trousers, right where Chase’s manhood would take the most damage.

“Yeah, I bit your cock,” Macdonald confessed as the clip ended. 

“Wait,” said Chase, his memory restored. Where was the rest of the publicity material they’d filmed? “It was much longer than that.”

“Yeah,” replied Macdonald. “We cut it down to just me biting your cock.”
